Selfies and six packs to derail Arsenal's title hopes: Keane

Arsenal are not capable of winning the Premier League title this season because they have too many players interested in selfies and six packs rather than winning football matches, according to former Manchester United captain Roy Keane. Keane, a fire and brimstone midfielder, won seven Premier League titles as a player and enjoyed particularly competitive relationship with Arsenal and their similarly combative captain Patrick Viera. "Arsenal have some really good players -- some good …

Falcao can play as dual striker, says Mourinho

By Martyn Herman LONDON (Reuters) - Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho said he could adopt a two-pronged attack with Colombian Radamel Falcao offering more options for the coming season after joining on loan from Monaco. Falcao struggled to impress during a similar spell at Manchester United last season, but Mourinho has great faith in a player who will wear the number nine shirt for Chelsea. Diego Costa shouldered most of the striking burden last season as a lone striker in a 4-2-3-1 system, but …

    Predictable Premier League excitement begins

By Steve Tongue LONDON (Reuters) - England's Premier League is undoubtedly one of the most exciting in world football but as it embarks on its 24th season on Aug. 8 is it also becoming one of the most predictable? Last term only Newcastle United and Everton, both of whom dropped down the table, moved more than four places either way, while two of the three promoted clubs went straight back down. While the usual suspects are expected to contest the title, however, none of them have managed to …

Man United bank on Schweinsteiger for midfield mongrel

By Ed Osmond LONDON (Reuters) - The signing of Germany captain Bastian Schweinsteiger from Bayern Munich was a massive statement of intent by Manchester United. Not since Roy Keane swaggered round the Old Trafford pitch from 1993-2005 have United had a midfield enforcer with the skill, power and strength of character to run the team. The 31-year-old Schweinsteiger, a World Cup winner and serial trophy accumulator with Bayern, has all the attributes to emulate the charismatic Irishman. …

Ginebra (Spain), Dec 24 (IANS/EFE) The child that Spanish soccer player Gerard Pique and Colombian singer Shakira expect this January will be an FC Barcelona soccer club member from the minute the baby is born.

The Barcelona defender confirmed this in a statement on UEFA.com recalling that his parents made him a Barcelona member as soon as he was born and that he will do the same for his firstborn.

Pique was born in February 1987 and soon afterwards got his first membership card from the Catalan club - and recently received the insignia that FC Barcelona gives everyone who celebrates his silver anniversary - 25 years - as a member of the blue-and-red.

The soccer star said it was the idea of his maternal grandfather, Amador Bernabeu, and since then both he and his parents made Pique aware "of what it means to be a fan, to be a Barcelona supporter and I'm very proud of that", he added.

In the brief interview, he also spoke about his personal life and the change brought about by his relationship with the Colombian singer.

"I believe love changes you. It's a very important part of your life and when you have it, you see things differently. When you're alone, you concentrate a lot on soccer and your pals," he said.

"Now it's all about your companion and besides there's also a baby on the way, so I mean things change and you have to adapt. But I think that everything that's happening to me is beautiful," he said.
