On her birthday, 23 March, Kangana Ranaut announced her next project. She will play late Tamil actor and politician Jayalalithaa in a biopic titled Thalaivi in Tamil and Jaya in Hindi. It will be directed by AL Vijay.
The actor said that she chose the role over starting work on her own biopic, which was to be written by Manikarnika writer KV Vijayendra Prasad, because she identified with Jayalalithaa’s story.
"“I see parallels with my own journey in hers, but her success story is much bigger than mine. In the first narration itself, I could see myself doing the part because it came naturally to me. I could have gone ahead with my own biopic, but this was much more enticing.”" - Kangana Ranaut, Actor
Talking about her return to South Indian cinema after featuring in a couple of titles at the beginning of her career, Kangana added, "Regional films have always interested me. When we go there to promote our films, we realise they have a thriving industry of their own and there is a major lack of connect with that audience as a Hindi film actor. I was looking for the right script to come my way and when it did, I lapped it up."
The actor will reportedly be paid a princely sum of Rs 24 crore for the Tamil and Hindi versions of the film. She has said that she will begin taking Tamil lessons on finishing work on her upcoming movies Panga and Mental Hai Kya. "The scenes will be in Tamil, and I will learn the language to understand the character better and feel closer to her (Jayalalithaa)," she said.
