Delhi school locks up kids in basement after parents fail to pay fee
Apathetic and callous attitude of a school towards its young students came to the light when several students of a private school were locked up in the basement of the school building for close to five hours in the sweltering heat in central Delhi's Hauz Qazi area.
The school took the extreme step as the kids' parents allegedly did not pay school fee on time. Delhi Police on Tuesday charged the school authorities under sections 342 of the IPC and 75 of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2000.
According to the parents, the incident took place on Monday afternoon and was brought to the notice of the Delhi Police. As per the parents, the children were locked up in the basement of the school in 40 degree temperature.
As per the complainant as stated in the FIR, she along with other parents dropped their daughters at the Rabea Girls Public School, located in Gali Qasim Jaan at Hauz Qazi on Monday morning.
"Our children study in the primary section of the Rabea Girls Public School. As per the daily routine, we dropped our children off at the school at 7 am on July 9 and returned home. Around 12:30 pm, we went to pick them up but did not find them in their respective classrooms. When we asked the school staff, we found that our daughters had been locked up in the basement of the school since 7 am. It made us so angry that we broke open the latch and found the girls lying on the floor. We were shocked at the sight. The girls were lying in the sweltering heat and had been without food and water, some of the girls had even become dehydrated," said a parent.
She alleged further that when she and other parents approached headmistress Farha Diba Khan they were met with insults. "We were asked to leave the school premises," she added.
A senior police officer said that as per the initial investigation, the school authorities on Monday held the students 'captive' after their parents failed to pay the school fees. The parents alleged that the head mistress was informed about the issue. However, she refused to listen to the parents.
