A notice to Centre and Twitter on a PIL seeking to curb hate speech and offensive material on the social media site was released by the Supreme Court on Friday. The plea sought a system through false accounts to verify Twitter content and ads promoting hate through fake news and instigative tweets.
While issuing the notice, a bench headed by Chief Justice SA Bobde sought their answer to the plea and tagged it along with a related pending plea. The petition, filed by BJP leader Vinit Goenka, also a member of the Governing Council (CRIS), claimed that, in the name of eminent people and high dignitaries, there are hundreds of fake Twitter handles and bogus Facebook accounts. In the middle of an ongoing tussle between the Centre and Twitter, the SC note arrives.
