Sasha Tang: From shed to a Million in Covid year with Algo Trading

With the endless opportunities the world of algo trading has created, businesses and individuals alike were bound to find unique ways to translate this tremendous tool into a means by which to grow their personal wealth. It is said that the goal of a successful trader is to make the best trades and money is really secondary. Before you invest in something, you should invest in yourself. Sasha Tang is one of those examples that the world of algo traders are following now.

What do you get when you combine a restless, retired, (bot) algo-making trader with “spare” time during a global pandemic? Basically, the same thing minus the retired part. In 2019 Sasha had retired from creating market making algos and was trading solely so he didn’t lose any of the skills he had gathered. In 2020, Sasha was introduced to a trader by the name of Brian Watt.

Brian, a talented and colourful mean reversion trader that predominantly scalped smaller time frames live on youtube – If you have never seen him, do yourself a favour and check him out! Never content to trade manually (although he’s VERY good at that too…), Sasha studied Brian’s style and put his team to work implementing a set of rules he created from his studies. This produced an algo that would form the basis of his final and, in his humble opinion, best bot: Random Lines Algo. It is said that the hard work puts you where the good luck finds you. If you don’t find a way to make money while you sleep, you will work until you die.

The original name of the bot was Fib Price Projection algo. However, when it was shown to another trader, they spent 2 seconds looking at what it had done, said “looks like random lines to me”, and promptly moved on with their day. From this interaction, the Random Lines algo was born.

The premise of Random Lines is theoretically simple. If you are patient, scale correctly (on right prices in the market) and are not greedy with targets, it is VERY difficult to lose capital – my personal testing shows a 99% win rate – even through a market crash like we have seen during the pandemic. Now, the exact magic that Sasha Tang and his team have coded into the bot to allow this will remain a mystery to me, but I am amazed every time I see it in action. In making the Random Lines bot, Sasha and his team drew inspiration from previous bots-algos they have created – including those commissioned by institutional traders – as well as Sasha’s wealth of trading knowledge accumulated over many years.

It has not always been smooth sailing for Sasha and his team. When they started trading and making bots, Sasha was working out of a shack, sitting on a chair so old it barely resembled a chair, wondering how he was going to pay his team. Fast forward through a ridiculous amount of screen time (over 11k hours logged to date!), a global pandemic, blood, sweat and tears, and Sasha Tang just rolled over into his first million-dollar profit from trading. Watching this man evolve into what he is today has been truly awe inspiring, and we are looking forward to watching his progress toward his next goals.

As the algo trading strategies continues to evolve it is clear that it will require initiative and hard work from those who wish to stay on top. One thing is for sure, however the space changes, it is certain that Sasha Tang will be there, leading the charge.
