Gujarat Lions beat Royal Challengers Bangalore on Thursday by 7 wickets at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bangalore.
This win propelled them to the sixth spot in the IPL points table while RCB slipped to 7th.
Chasing a target of 135 runs, Gujarat Lions survived an early scare when they lost 2 wickets in succession and were 23/2 in 4.1 overs.
Aaron Finch came in at number 4 and right from the outset started hammering the RCB bowlers. Finch scored the fastest half-century for Gujarat Lions to guide his team to the finishing line with ease.
Aaron Finch played a match-winning knock of 72 runs off 34 balls. His innings included 6 sixes and 5 fours. Lions skipper Suresh Raina played a slow innings as he was showing some signs of discomfort after his awkward fall while fielding in the RCB innings.
Srinath Aravind was the only RCB bowler who was economical. He took both the openers’ wickets.
RCB ran out of luck after Gujarat Lions skipper Suresh Raina got a lifeline after Yuzvendra Chahal bowled a no-ball.
Speaking after the match, RCB captain Virat Kohli refused to give up. “We need to get better and have to notch up wins. We needed some luck go our way. We need to play positive cricket. We should enjoy the tournament”.
“Individuals need to take responsibility and turn things around”, he added.
Earlier, RCB’s batting yet again capitulated. They seemed to have not learnt any lesson from their Eden Gardens debacle.
The top order fell like a pack of cards. First to go was captain Virat Kohli. After a cautious start, the captain fell to good ball by Basil Thampi and was caught by Aaron Finch on 10 runs.
RCB were bowled out for 134 runs and this was the first time they were bowled out in two successive games.
Chris Gayle’s slump in form continued after he scored a mere 8 runs from 11 balls. AB de Villiers was unlucky as he was run-out by Ravindra Jadeja after a terrible mix-up with fellow batsman Mandeep Singh.
Only Kedar Jadhav (31) and Pawan Negi (32) scored some runs and managed to get decent total and avoided major embarrassment for RCB.
Gujarat skipper Suresh Raina was bang on with his choice of bowlers. Andrew Tye was the pick of the bowlers as he took 3 wickets giving away only 12 runs. Ravindra Jadeja also bowled well taking 2 wickets and giving away 28 runs in his quota of four overs.
RCB next play Rising Pune Supergiant on 29th April while Gujarat Lions host Mumbai Indians at Rajkot the same day.
