Ronaldo, Higuain on target

Madrid: Real Madrid defeated Celta Vigo 2-0 in a La Liga match at the Bernabeu on Saturday. Cristiano Ronaldo scored via a penalty in the 67th minute after Gonzalo Higuain gave the lead in the 11th minute.

Celta came close to pulling a goal back late on but Real 'keeper Iker Casillas produced a fine save to keep out South Korea striker Park Chu-young's header. In another match, Malaga defeated Valladolid.

Calcutta: Okolie Odafe and Manish Maithani had an altercation during a practice session on Saturday. Odafe was furious after he felt that Manish deliberately failed to pass him the ball when he was in a goal-scoring position.

Calcutta: Odisha thrashed Bengal 8-2 in the semi-final of the State Sub-Junior National (Zonal) Hockey Championship on Saturday. In the other semi-final, Jharkand beat Manipur 7-1.

Chiba: Jeev Milkha Singh made the cut with rounds of 72 and 73 at the Bridgestone Open here. He was lying in tied 48th place at three-over 145.

New Delhi: Garvit Batra and Snehadevi Reddy won the boys' and girls' under-16 singles titles respectively at the Fenesta Open National Tennis Championship here on Saturday. While Garvit beat Shashank 7-5, 4-6, 6-2, Snehadevi defeated Pranjalla Yadlapalli 2-6, 6-4, 6-1.

Leeds: Aditya Mehta advanced to the second round of the Antwerp Open European Tour 3 after his opponent, Stephen Lee of England, did not turn up for the match.

Calcutta: Iti Sarkar will lead an 11-member state girls' (under-19) handball squad in the Junior Girls' National Handball Championship which is scheduled to be held at Erode, Tamil Nadu, from Monday.

Calcutta: The Cricket Association of Bengal has postponed the Ranji Trophy team selection till October 28. The selectors were supposed to announce the squad on Saturday. But the CAB had a change of mind as a few key Bengal players are expected to be in the India A squad, who are scheduled to play a warm-up game against England on October 30. The India A squad will be named on Wednesday.
