Double celebrations for Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma on 30th April as it marked his 29th birthday coupled with an exhilarating victory in super over against Gujarat Lions in VIVO IPL 2017. MI teammates had a perfect gift in store for their skipper as they won the one-over eliminator with an impressive bowling by Jasprit Bumrah in the super over. The Mumbai Indians dressing room was bubbling with joy as Rohit Sharma’s birth celebrations were carried out in full swing. The birthday boy cut the cake and first offered it to his sweetheart wife Ritika Sajdeh, who was also present along with cheering Mumbai Indians unit. The win over Suresh Raina led Gujarat Lions consolidated the two-time IPL winners’ second position in the points table of 10th Indian Premier League.
The official Facebook page of Mumbai Indians posted a series of photos and videos highlighting the sweet victory and birthday celebrations of Rohit Sharma. The man-in-charge of the happy unit was surprised with a stadium shaped caked which he cut amidst the Happy Birthday Song sung by his teammates. We saw a jubilant Rohit Sharma offer the first piece of cake to his wife Ritika as she captured the cute memories in her phone. The skipper was then held tightly from behind by Indian spinner, and MI mainstay Harbhajan Singh as other members of the side smudged cake on his face. What a memorable birthday it turned out to be for Rohit Sharma!
Earlier on the field, Gujarat Lions won the toss and elected to bat first playing at Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Rajkot. Lions riding on opening batsman Ishan Kishan’s timely score of 48 and Ravindra Jadeja (28), James Faulkner (21) and Andrew Tye (25) could manage a decent total of 153 on the scoreboard. Mumbai Indians bowlers Krunal Pandya took three wickets, Jasprit Bumrah and Lasith Malinga picked two wickets each with Harbhajan Singh taking one scalp.
Chasing 154, Mumbai Indians got off to a solid start with wicketkeeper-batsman Parthiv Patel plundering 70 runs off 44 deliveries. Just when it looked like another easy win for Mumbai, the team derailed with Gujarat Lions bowler Basil Thampi taking three crucial wickets. Mumbai Indians needing 11 runs in last over received a significant boost with Krunal Pandya hitting a six off Irfan Pathan’s first ball of the final over. But with continuous wickets tumbling, the match tied resulting in the super over.
Mumbai Indians batting first in the super over made 11 runs with Jos Buttler, Kieron Pollard and captain Rohit Sharma. Needing 12 runs to win the match, Gujarat trusted their imports, Brendon McCullum and Aaron Finch. Mumbai sent in their young blood, Jasprit Bumrah who proved Rohit Sharma’s decision right by bowling a near-perfect over. Despite starting off with a no-ball, resulting in a free hit, Bumrah maintained his composure as McCullum and Finch looked like tailenders failing to understand his lethal deliveries. Mumbai Indians are now behind Kolkata Knight Riders in the VIVO IPL 2017 team standings but remains a solid contender to lift this year’s championship title.
