From sensational exposes to the chilling murder of radical thinkers, from long-pending cases being concluded to the occurrence of unexpected mishaps, year 2017 had its share of landmark events.
On June 8, China initiated a strategic manoeuvre in Doklam, a once obscure patch of disputed territory between China and Bhutan that triggered a chain of events leading to a dangerous standoff between India and China. With days to go before Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was scheduled to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping at the BRICS summit in Xiamen, a mutual ‘disengagement’ at Doklam was announced. Over the next couple of months diplomatic ties between the two countries were strained. On August 28, 2017 the two nations announced that they had agreed to pull their troops back from the face-off, however the damage done over the course of Doklam will have important spillover effects in the coming years.
