From sensational exposes to the chilling murder of radical thinkers, from long-pending cases being concluded to the occurrence of unexpected mishaps, year 2017 had its share of landmark events.
After 19 long years, on December 16, 2017, the Grand Old Party of India anointed a new leader in 47-year-old Rahul Gandhi who replaced Sonia Gandhi as the President of the Indian National Congress. He was unanimously elected the President with no worthy opponent. The Member of Parliament from Amethi has assumed the position at a time when the Congress has literally hit rock bottom in terms of electoral gains. Even so, Rahul seems to be trying to leave no stone unturned to give the reigning Bharatiya Janata Party tough competition as was evident from the recently concluded polls in Gujarat. But what remains to be seen is if the 5th generation Gandhi can turn around the fortunes of his party given the saffron wave that is enveloping the nation.
