Reliance Jio could soon debut its home broadband and internet-centric TV service in India. The company has been long mooted to expand its offerings in the country beyond mobile internet, and it seems that any announcement on the other aspects of high-speed internet from Jio is just around the corner. How so?
The company’s website, Jio, for the first time, has added home broadband and Jio Link to its section, as you can see here.
The Quick Recharge section on Jio’s website now gives us a hint that broadband and TV services are finally set to be rolled out. We don’t know how much they are going to cost, but going by Jio’s recent history, don’t bet against the home internet becoming a major threat to providers like Airtel and Hathaway.
This could be one of the reasons why Airtel decided to pick up Tikona Broadband, while Vodafone could also make an entry into home broadband, after acquiring You Broadband earlier this year.
In addition, Jio Link could also fill up the space left open by Airtel’s exit from the Internet Protocol Television (IPTv) business in 2016. Plugging the home internet with TV service, via its large-range fibre spectrum, could enable Jio to price its offers much lower than competition.
