Vice President Venkaiah Naidu on Monday, 23 April, rejected the impeachment motion against Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra, moved by the Congress-led Opposition.
Following the decisions made by the Supreme Court in the Justice Loya case, the Congress-led opposition submitted an impeachment motion against the Chief Justice of India, which was signed by 64 MPs, but subsequently rejected by Vice President Naidu.
The decision by the Vice President to reject the motion left Twitter divided.
Many users, including members of the opposition, claimed that the move by the Vice President was unjust and influenced by the Vice President’s allegiance to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
“Another Black Day”: Opposition Members Slam Decision
Surprise surprise !! Everybody knew the #ImpeachmentMotion would be rejected by #VenkaiahNaidu ji . More constitutional remedies are available including challenging this rejection in the SC. The #Impeachment grounds are not for the #VicePresident to decide upon.— Tehseen Poonawalla (@tehseenp) April 23, 2018
Is there any single institution of Democracy that stands strengthened by Modi Sarkar?Parliament, Judiciary,Election Commission,Reserve Bank of India, Lokpal, Media, Governors, Information Commission, Speaker and even the Citizen herself? And BJP is preaching on Impeachment Motion!— Ghanshyam Tiwari (@ghanshyamtiwari) April 23, 2018
The hasty dismissal of the impeachment notice given by MPs of 7 parties is blatantly illegal & unconstitutional. BJP govt is abusing constitutional posts to muzzle all democratic means of redressal. It also happened in the case of the no-confidence motion during budget session.— Sitaram Yechury (@SitaramYechury) April 23, 2018
Another black day in the history of this totalitarian reign. VP M Venkaiah Naidu rejected our notice seeking impeachment of CJI Dipak Mishra. And with this, the mysterious death of #JudgeLoya will be buried forever. BJP is bending the law as it wishes which is dangerous to India.— Dr. G Parameshwara (@DrParameshwara) April 23, 2018
VP’s Integrity in Doubt?
This was obvious. He is a BJP guy, why do people expect any other outcome? Only people we do expect to rise about party and shakha are Judges but in recent days we have seen even they don't. #VenkaiahNaidu #ImpeachmentMotion— Sanjukta Basu (@sanjukta) April 23, 2018
Vice President doesn’t give any factual rebuttal to charges in Impeachment motion— Sid (@sidmtweets) April 23, 2018
All he says is that after speaking with some experts he is satisfied to dismiss it
Is this how institutions work? This is like Loya case.U talk with ppl,do not hold an inquiry & give clean chits
Misra didn't utter an alphabet but. And the govt rejected the impeachment motion. https://t.co/cUdOwLcBCU— Ankur Bhardwaj (@Bhayankur) April 23, 2018
Now that impeachment motion has been rejected, some are saying it can be challenged in SC.— Meghnad (@Memeghnad) April 23, 2018
Wait. So a motion that is about misconduct of the CJI involving fixing benches, will be challenged so that the CJI can happily fix another bench to consider it?
Yeah. Totally makes sense.
I know the impeachment motion was very disturbing and unjust but given the consequences it was justified. And VP rejecting the impeachment motion even after 70 Rajya Sabha MPs have signed it raises questions about VP'S integrity.#VenkaiahNaidu— Abhishek Pratap (@Abhi5hekk) April 23, 2018
BJP On Board
But many users, including the members of the BJP, claimed that the decision made by Vice President Naidu was correct and justified.

Good decision by Vice President @MVenkaiahNaidu This will set a precedent that attempts to influence and pressurize judiciary through threats of impeachment should not succeed. Today’s order will be a mile stone in the independence of judiciary!!— Akhilesh Sharma (@akhileshsharma1) April 23, 2018
