When Coleen Rooney accused "Rebekah Vardy's account" of leaking stories about her to the press, it sparked a lighthearted viral reaction – with many across social media sourcing entertainment in what came to be known as 'Wagatha Christie'.
However, footballer Jamie Vardy's wife, 39, has opened up about the toll on her mental health after Wayne Rooney's other half, 34, sent the internet into meltdown in October 2019.
Speaking to The Sun's Fabulous magazine, the mother-of-five – who was heavily pregnant with her 15-month-old daughter Olivia when the story broke – revealed how she was forced to turn to seek professional help in the aftermath of the Instagram saga.
The model, who is currently engaged in a legal battle over the incident, said: "I have had therapy in the last couple of years."
Vardy added: "I had it because it was something like I had never experienced before."
She was subjected to abuse on social media, and in court documents she revealed fears that she would lose her baby due to stress, as well as how she has suffered suicidal thoughts, panic attacks and insomnia.
The Dancing On Ice star said therapy had helped her "re-channel my emotions, refocus and look at things in a different light".
Discussing receiving death threats online, she said that "they really aren’t funny and should be taken more seriously" adding, "you never know the mental state of the person who has sent you these messages".
In December, Vardy – who reached the quarter-finals of the ITV skating show earlier this month – told Hello! magazine that she hoped her dispute with mother-of-four Rooney, who she is suing for libel damages, would soon be resolved.
She said: “The new year could potentially see a resolution between us.
“I’m pretty sure the public are sick of reading about it, too.”
She married Leicester City player Jamie in 2016, and the couple, who live with their family in Lincolnshire, share three children – daughter Sofia, five, son Finley, three, as well as daughter Olivia.
Additionally, she has a daughter, Megan, 13, and son Taylor, nine, from previous relationships.
