The trailer of Rangeela Raja proudly proclaims at the start that it is bringing back the hit combination of Govinda and producer Pahlaj Nihalani after a gap of 25 years. Pahlaj Nihalani who? The same guy who is the reason why James Bond went sanskaari in SPECTRE when the former was the Censor Board Chief. The same dude whose 'Modi Kaka' fan-video was so embarrassing that our camera-loving PM ignored its existence. Yes, that Pahlaj Nihalani! Before he made Censor Board a bigger joke than it was, Nihalani was once a prolific producer, having backed three of Govinda's big hits in Ilzaam, Shola Aur Shabnam and Aankhen (which also happens to be one of Govinda's biggest hits of his career). Govinda to Play Vijay Mallya in Pahlaj Nihalani's Rangeela Raja.
If there is any hope you have from this combo returning after such a long time, then after watching the trailer of Rangeela Raja, it will make you wish they would have just released Aankhen again instead. For Rangeela Raja is truly embarrassing for anyone who has grown up watching Govinda movies and is now helplessly watching him make a fool himself, that too in a double role. From cavorting with semi-clad girls more than half his age, to making crass, humourless jokes, to dressing himself in drag, Govinda will make you squirm in awkwardness. Someone please give this supremely talented actor (yes he is!) a reality check and a calendar.
At least, his last film, FryDay, was decently made even if it also catered to the front-benchers. However, Rangeela Raja is Govinda halfway back to his Aa Gaya Hero phase.
