Rajya Sabha disrupted for fifth day

New Delhi, Nov. 29 (ANI): The Rajya Sabha was paralysed for the fifth consecutive day today after an uproar over issues such as quota for SCs/STs in promotions in Government jobs and Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in multi-brand retail.

As the House met for the day, NDA members led by BJP leaders M Venkaiah Naidu and Ravi Shankar Prasad were on their feet raising the issue. Some members shouted slogans against allowing FDI in retail sector.

Samajwadi Party members too were on their feet opposing a bill to provide reservation to SCs and STs in promotions in government jobs.

As the din continued, Chairman Mohammed Hamid Ansari adjourned the House till noon and later till Friday.

Meanwhile in the Lok Sabha, Speaker Meira Kumar allowed discussion followed by vote under rule 184 on FDI in multi-brand retail.

Kumar announced that there would be a discussion and vote on FDI, saying she hoped that the session would function smoothly.

The date and time of the debate and vote are yet to be discussed.

Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kamal Nath and senior BJP leader Sushma Swaraj met the Lok Sabha Speaker earlier today.

The government earlier hinted at having no problem with a vote on retail. (ANI)
