Rajkummar Rao On Newton Entering Oscars: The Film Will Be Relevant To International Audiences As Well
Yesterday, the entire nation was elated at the news of Rajkummar Rao starrer Newton’s entry to the Oscars 2018. The news came as a surprise as Bollywood films this year have seen little success. However, with a content-driven film like Newton holding credibility for the top prize, this should come as a paradigm shift in the industry. It is time for good content more than anything else right now.
“It’s a happy shocker. We were hardly expecting this,” says Rao regarding the good news, when speaking to Mid Day. “We made a film against all adversities, on a tight budget. But, it was an honest film. I am glad that the film is being appreciated by all and even after its commercial release, we’ve only had compliments coming our way.” He attributes this victory to the hard work from everyone in the Newton team: “When you put in your best, you rarely go wrong. We’re happy with the film we have made and can’t wait for the world to see it now.” ALSO READ: Rajkummar Rao’s Newton Won Against Prabhas’ Baahubali 2 To Be India’s Official Entry To The Oscars 2018
If Newton were to get nominated for the Best Films In Foreign Language category, the way Lagaan did 16 years ago, it would be a great feat. And quizzed if this could be the beginning of an era into a number of more Oscar-worthy films, Rao said: “We are happy just basking in the glory at the moment. I am sure once this phase passes, we will get to work and weave a great marketing strategy.”
Rao also feels Newton enjoys an advantage owing to the universal appeal of its subject. “If you see today, countries like the US, UK or even Europe at large have their own socio-political issues. So, Newton’s theme will be relevant to them as well. Moreover, it’s a great time for South Asian artistes and filmmakers. Not only is the West acknowledging our work, they are sitting up and taking notice of all the great content that’s coming out of the region.”
Newton is directed by Amit Masurkar and is produced by Drishyam Films and Colour Yellow Productions. Rajkummar Rao plays the lead in the movie, with a really good supporting cast in Pankaj Tripathy, Anjali Patil, Raghubir Yadav and Sanjay Mishra.
