Rahul Gandhi's support to Mamata Banerjee smacks of hypocrisy

When Congress president Rahul Gandhi extended support to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee as she picked up the cudgels against the Narendra Modi government at the Centre, it smacked of hypocrisy.

The Trinamool Congress supremo sat on a ‘dharna’ in protest against the Central Bureau of Investigation raids at the residence of Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar. Kumar had been ignoring CBI summons pertaining to Saradha chit fund scam, in which the alleged involvement of many ministers of the ruling TMC dispensation had come to light.

The Bharatiya Janata Party, meanwhile, said that the TMC seemed to be protecting Rajeev Kumar as ‘he knows the names of the TMC big-guns involved in the Rs 40,000-crore scam’.

Even as the Mamata-Modi war continues to escalate, the Opposition parties, particularly the Congress, have decided to use Mamata to hit back at the BJP.

But the hypocrisy of the Congress stands exposed. Rahul, who claims to stand ‘shoulder to shoulder’ with Mamata now, had on numerous occasions in the past accused her of ‘looting’ Bengal through the chit fund scam.

Also, the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance was the one who first registered a case against the Saradha chit fund scam in 2013 and later slammed Mamata for cheating 20 lakh people. The Congress scion had launched a broadside against West Bengal chief minister in the run-up to the general elections 2014 and the West Bengal Assembly polls in 2016.

Given his strident rhetoric against Mamata and his indictment of her in the chit fund scam, it appears that it is nothing but Rahul’s desire to oust the Modi government that has spurred him to jump to Mamata’s defence.

In a bid to defeat Modi in the upcoming general elections, Rahul is willing to go to any extent. If that means going back on his earlier statements or joining forces with corrupt forces, so be it.
