Rahul Gandhi Says Let’s Make Congress a Grand Old And Young Party
New Delhi, Dec 16: Rahul Gandhi is all set to take over the reins of the Congress from his mother Sonia Gandhi today. Rahul Gandhi was declared the party’s president-elect on December 11 after the organisational poll process. A grand celebration is planned at the All India Congress Committee Headquarters in Delhi to mark Rahul Gandhi crowing. Earlier on Friday, Sonia Gandhi, while speaking to the media, had said “My role now is to retire.” However, the Congress was quick to clarify that the leader is retiring from her post but not quitting politics.
The Central Election Authority president Mullapally Ramachandran will hand over the Certificate of Election to the newly-elected president of Congress today after which Rahul Gandhi will deliver his acceptance speech.
Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Sonia Gandhi, current and former Chief Ministers, MPs, senior Congress leaders, and all PCC chiefs and delegates will be present at the handing over ceremony.
The 47-year-old leader will take over the Congress leadership two days before the much-awaited counting for the Gujarat Assembly Elections 2017 and Himachal Pradesh Assembly Elections 2017.
Notably, Halwais from Chandni Chowk will arrive at the Youth Congress headquarters in Delhi and prepare sweets like laddoos and jalebis, which will be distributed following Rahul Gandhi‘s elevation.
Rahul Gandhi was appointed the vice-president of the Congress in January 2013. Before Rahul, other members of the family who occupied the post of Congress president were Motilal Nehru, Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi.
