Congress to Have Its Own Think Tanks To Advise on Policy Matters, Claims Report

New Delhi, Jan 7: After assuming the office of Congress President, Rahul Gandhi has tasked few party leaders with forming new think tanks within the party. The party, jubilant after a good performance in Gujarat Assembly elections, is looking forward to form research cells in its state units too. A report of a prominent daily […]

New Delhi, Dec 16: Rahul Gandhi will formally take over as Congress president from his mother Sonia Gandhi today. Rahul Gandhi was declared the party’s president-elect on December 11 after the organisational poll process. A day before Rahul’s elevation, Sonia Gandhi, who holds the record of being the longest-serving president of the Congress, said, “My role now is to retire.” However, the Congress sought to quell it saying she has only retired from the party chief’s role and not from politics. A grand celebration is planned to mark Rahul’s crowning.

The entire process will be completed after the Central Election Authority president Mullapally Ramachandran hands over the Certificate of Election to the newly-elected president of Congress, after which Rahul Gandhi will deliver his acceptance speech. Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Sonia Gandhi, current and former Chief Ministers, MPs, senior Congress leaders, and all PCC chiefs and delegates will be present at the handing over ceremony.

47-year-old Rahul Gandhi will formally take over reins of the grand-old party two days before the counting of votes for Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh Assembly elections, the outcome of which could be a trendsetter ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha election. His major challenge remains the revamping of party organisation, apart from electoral battles in the run-up to the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

Congress workers across the country have been licking their bruises after facing massive defeats in back-to-back elections. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s dream of Congress-mukt Bharat may soon turn into a reality with Congress losing power in most of the states in the country.

Ahead of Rahul Gandhi‘s formal elevation as Congress president, the party workers were seen distributing sweets, various stalls, distributing badges and key-chains having Rahul’s picture, have been set up outside the Congress party headquarters in the national capital.

A large number of party workers and supporters gathered outside the party headquarters. Halwais from Chandni Chowk will arrive at the Youth Congress headquarters in Delhi and prepare sweets like laddoos and jalebis, which will be distributed following Rahul Gandhi‘s elevation.

Rahul’s elevation comes close to five years after he was appointed party vice president in January 2013. Before Rahul, other members of the family who occupied the post of Congress president were Motilal Nehru, Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi and Sonia.
