Rahul crying more than Alok Verma, BJP says. Explains why. Hint: Michel Mama
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) says Rahul Gandhi "is crying more" than Alok Verma after the CBI director's dismissal on Thursday by a high-powered committee headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
And why, according to the BJP, is the Congress fretting? GVL Narasimha Rao, a spokesperson for the ruling party, said the Congress wanted to intervene in the CBI debate because it's worried the agency is getting at the truth in the AgustWestland case and other defence deals.
Rahul Gandhi and the CBI row
Rahul Gandhi, on the other hand, has said the Modi government sent Alok Verma on forced leave in October because the CBI was about to being investigating Prime Minister Narendra Modi's role in the NDA's deal for Rafale fighter jets. Among the Congress's accusations with respect to the agreement is that Anil Ambani's Reliance Defence was chosen as an offset partner of the French jetmaker under pressure from the Modi government.
The Supreme Court reinstated Alok Verma on Tuesday, but also asked a high-powered committee to look into any required action against him. Two people on the committee, Narendra Modi and Supreme Court Justice AK Sikri, voted to remove the CBI director. Rahul Gandhi tweeted that fear was "rampaging" through the prime minister's mind, and that he'd become a prisoner of his own lies.
Fear is now rampaging through Mr Modi's mind. He can't sleep. He stole 30,000Cr from the IAF and gave it to Anil Ambani. Sacking the CBI Chief #AlokVerma twice in a row, clearly shows that he is now a prisoner of his own lies.Rahul Gandhi (@RahulGandhi) January 10, 2019
Now the BJP says Rahul Gandhi is crying more than Alok Verma, and that the Congress is worried about the CBI's investigation of defence deals like Agusta Westland.
The BJP has upped the ante in its attacks on the Congress over the AgustaWestland case ever since an alleged middleman -- the British national Christian Michel -- was extradited to India last month. The CBI and the Enforcement Directorate (ED), which probes economic offences, are both investigating Michel. The ED has said Christian Michel spoke about the "son of an Italian lady" and took "Mrs Gandhi's" name in reference to a query. (These are claims made by ED officials. They need to be ascertained before a court of law.)
Documents show that two people, including Christian Michel, strategised for Rafale's competitor Eurofighter in order to seal the deal in its favour (The competition was during the Congress-led UPA's term.). Prime Minister Narendra Modi said this week that according to media reports, "Michel mama" had lobbied for another company. He asked Congress leaders for an explanation.
A QUICK RECAP BEFORE YOU GO: A spokesperson for the BJP said today that Rahul Gandhi "is crying more" than Alok Verma after the CBI director was shunted out for the second time. He said the Congress is worried about the CBI's investigation of defence deals like Agusta Westland.
