1. China Again Blocks Bid to List Masood Azhar as ‘Global Terrorist’

In yet another setback to India’s bid to designate Pakistan-based terror group Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) Chief Masood Azhar as a global terrorist, China on Wednesday, 13 March, put a ‘technical hold’ on a proposal in the UN Security Council to ban him following the Pulwama terror attack.

China, a veto-wielding permanent member of the Security Council, blocked India's bid for the fourth time in the last 10 years.

The proposal to designate Azhar under the 1267 Al-Qaeda Sanctions Committee of the UN Security Council was moved by France, the UK and the US on 27 February, days after a suicide bomber of the Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) killed nearly 40 CRPF personnel leading to a flare-up in tensions between India and Pakistan.

2. India, Pakistan Hold Talks on Kartarpur Corridor

Addressing the media after the conclusion of the first meeting on the Kartarpur Corridor, MEA Joint Secretary Deepak Mittal said, "This doesn't mean resumption of any bilateral dialogues with Pakistan."

The Indian side further said on Thursday, 14 March, that it had stressed that 5,000 pilgrims should be allowed to visit every day in the first phase of the project and that travel should be absolutely visa-free.

The two countries concluded their first meeting on Thursday, which was held to finalise the modalities for setting up of a corridor linking Gurudwara Darbar Sahib in Pakistani town of Kartarpur with Gurdaspur district in Punjab.

The next meeting will be held in Wagah on 2 April.

India’s loss in the ODI series against Australia could not have come at a better time.

For a side rated as the favourite to win the World Cup, India has quite a few problems to address. Remember this is the first time India starts as favourites at the World Cup since the 1987 edition. Every other time, India has gone in with a squad ‘full of potential’ but have never quite been the favourite. So the scrutiny is naturally that much more.

There will be a lot of discussion on the state of Indian cricket and whether the think-tank experimented too much. But the fact is that the loss in the series has given a reality check to the Indian ODI squad.
