QMumbai: Train Commuters to Protest Delays; BMC Cleans Juhu Beach

1.On July 1, Central Line Commuters to Wear Black Bands to Protest Delays

Commuters on the central, harbour and trans-harbour railway lines in the city will wear black bands on 1 July to protest against the delay of local trains.

Suburban railway passenger associations said that despite reaching out to the railway authorities, no action has been taken yet.

“We have contacted the central railway (CR) authorities and informed them about the problems faced by commuters. The frequent disruptions are leading to constant delay of trains. But the authorities have not done anything. So we have asked commuters to wear black bands as a symbol of protest on 1 July,” said Subash Gupta, president of Rail Yatri Parishad.

2. Uddhav to Ask Amit Shah to Rein in BJP Leaders

Irked about the statements by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders Girish Mahajan and Chandrakant Patil that the next chief minister of Maharashtra will be from their party, Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray is likely to ask BJP president Amit Shah to rein in its leaders.

The move comes at a time when both Thackeray and CM Devendra Fadnavis are set to address legislators of both parties on Monday, in a bid to keep a united front ahead of the Assembly elections. Sena functionaries said Thackeray was not pleased with the statements made by Mahajan on Saturday.

3. BMC Cleans Juhu Beach, Lifts 430 Tonnes of Garbage

Even before the arrival of the monsoon, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has removed more than 430 tonnes of garbage from the Juhu Beach in the last five days.

According to civic officials, they had deployed three beach cleaning machines, four compactors, three tractors with a trolley, one JCB along with more than 100 labourers daily for cleaning the Juhu Beach. In all, 431 tonnes of garbage had been lifted in the last five days, an official said.

4. Multi-Crore Cricket Betting Racket Busted, Two Bookies Arrested

Police arrested two men on Saturday for allegedly accepting and placing bets on ICC Cricket World Cup matches underway in the UK.

The accused were identified as Vishwas Takalkar (51), a resident of Dongri, and Ajay Kantraj (24), who told police that he ran a garment export business out of Bengaluru.

According to police, they received information that guests staying at Hotel Balwas on Grant Road were betting on cricket matches, following which a team, headed by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Anti-Narcotics Cell) Shivdeep Lande, raided room 203 at the establishment.

5. Bombay HC Dismisses Pleas Against Obtaining NOC for Buildings

The Bombay HC dismissed two petitions against obtaining no objection certificate (NOC) from the Indian Navy for issuance of occupancy certificates to buildings near naval establishments.

A division bench of Justice S C Dharmadhikari and Justice B Colabawalla said, “It can hardly be disputed that ensuring safety and security of our naval establishments is certainly in public interest… The security aspect is a fundamental necessity that the planning authority and the public bodies who are entrusted with the task of deciding on the location of residential areas, must be alive to at all times.”
