1. I-T Searches on Civil Contractors in Mumbai Reveal Rs 735 Crore Irregularities
The income tax (I-T) department on Thursday, 14 November revealed details of searches they carried out on 6 November at 37 properties of civil contractors in Mumbai and Surat. Many of these contractors have worked with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
In the searches, incriminating documents were seized that show large-scale tax evasion and money laundering. Some documents have also led to the detection of the use of bogus companies.
The I-T department has come across irregularities involving Rs 735 crore. Among the contractors, two were blacklisted by the BMC in 2017 after a probe into the Rs 350-crore road scam found them to blame for shoddy and substandard work.

2. Naval Sailor Found Dead With Bullet Injury
A 25-year-old sailor with the Indian Navy allegedly shot himself while on security duty at INS Angre in Fort late on Thursday, 14 November. Deceased Akhilesh Yadav, LEMP rank, was found at his duty post with bullet injury.
A defence spokesperson confirmed this to TOI, suspecting it to be a case of suicide. “No suicide note has been found. The reason for taking the extreme step is unknown. Probe is on,” said the officials.
On the evening of November, Yadav, who hails from Uttar Pradesh, was found at his duty post having sustained a bullet injury, apparently discharged from his service rifle. “The sailor was attached to INS Angre for security duties,” said the official.
Yadav was immediately rushed to INHS Asvini, the naval hospital, where he was declared brought in dead. Civil police and naval authorities are investigating the matter.

3. ‘Didi Stable’: Family Refutes Rumours of Lata Mangeshkar’s Death
Legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar is stable and getting better, the actor’s spokesperson said on Thursday, 14 November evening.
Lata’s spokesperson Anusha Srinivasan Iyer said, “Lata didi is stable and getting better. Request to not pay heed to needless rumours and react. Let us all collectively pray for her long life instead.”
Lata Mangeshkar was admitted to Mumbai’s Breach Candy hospital in the early hours of Monday.

4. Bacchu Kadu, Six Others Held During Farmers’ Protest March to Raj Bhavan
Legislator and chief of Prahar Janshakti Party, Bacchu Kadu, was arrested along with six others on Thursday, 14 November during a protest march of farmers to Raj Bhavan.
Prahar Janshakti Party workers, along with thousands of farmers, were staging a protest to highlight farmers’ issues such as crop loan waivers and crop damage owing to unseasonal downpour.
However, owing to a law-and-order issue, they were detained by the police at Nariman Point. The Mumbai police arrested Kadu and six other protestors on charges of rioting, violating the law, and getting into a scuffle with the police, while they were protesting near Mantralaya.
“After investigation, we arrested Kadu and his six fellow protestors for rioting and other charges. They have been released on bail,” said Subhash Khanvilkar, assistant commissioner of police, Colaba division.

5. Marathi Playback Singer Geeta Mali Dies in Road Accident
Marathi playback singer from Nashik Geeta Mali died in a road accident near Shahapur village on Mumbai-Nashik Highway on Thursday, 14 November.
She was returning home from Mumbai International airport after completing her shows in the US.
The accident took place after the car in which Geeta and her husband Vijay Mali were travelling, dashed into an oil tanker. While she died on the spot, Geeta’s husband is being treated at Shahpur civil hospital.
