1. Maratha Rally Today at Mumbai to Demand Quota for PG Med Students

A group of members of the Maratha community has announced that it will hold a rally at Azad Maidan today to protest against the Supreme Court’s decision to strike down the 16% Maratha reservation for postgraduate medical seats this year. The group wants the state to reserve seats for Maratha students by enforcing an ordinance.

Following the Apex court’s decision, the Maharashtra Common Entrance Test (CET) Cell had issued a notice of cancellation of admissions of around 290 students under the socially and educationally backward classes (SEBC) quota.

2. BMC Begins Survey to Improve Traffic Movement Around CSMT FOB Area

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had last month started a survey around the area where the CSMT foot over bridge had collapsed on 14 March , killing seven persons and injuring over 30, to ascertain means to improve traffic and pedestrian movement.

Following the collapse, the civic body has received suggestions that a new FOB should be constructed at the same place. The survey, which will include pedestrian and vehicle count thrice a day, will also study the impact of the new traffic signal installed under the demolished FOB.

3. Three Die After Inhaling Toxic Gas in Factory

Three men died on Sunday, 12 May, after inhaling toxic gas following a suspected gas leak when they were filling solvents in a tank at a chemical factory in Tarapur MIDC area. Police said they would file a first information report (FIR) in the case after officials from the Directorate of Industrial Safety and Health (DISH), Vasai, visit the site and submit a report.

According to the police none of the workers were wearing any safety gear even though they were dealing with toxic gases.

4. Contractors Who Have Not Done 40% Work to Get Notices

With the deadline for completing desilting of nullahs fast approaching and the uproar in the standing committee over misleading claims, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to send show-cause notices to four or five contractors who have not been able to finish 40% of the work so far.

BMC’s decision was made acting on a 7 May status report of desilting works on all nullahs in the city.

5. Cops Bust Gang Extorting Money From Passengers

The Railway Protection Force (RPF) has arrested a man and busted a gang that extorted money from passengers in lieu of seats in a general compartment of a train, a day after videos of the incident went viral on social media. Rafique Mohammad Sheikh was arrested and handed over to the Government Railways Police (GRP).

According to KK Ashraf, senior divisional security commissioner, Central Railway Mumbai Division, the anti-tout squad was put on alert after the video surface.
