1. TMC Seeks Explanation Over Assault of Minister by Partymen

The Trinamool Congress leadership has sought an explanation from party authorities of South Kolkata over the assault on Power Minister Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay on Tuesday night by supporters of fellow party leader and MP Mala Roy following a tiff during the ongoing Kolkata International Film Festival (KIFF).

BJP national general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya mocked the infighting of the TMC and said the people of Bengal would be the best judge in 2021 assembly polls.

Chattopadhyay, a senior TMC leader, on Tuesday night alleged that he was assaulted by supporters of Mala Roy following an altercation during the film festival.

2. Mentally Unstable Woman Kidnapped From Street, Gang Raped In Kolkata: Police

An inmate of a home for mentally ill women in the city was abducted from road and gang raped after she went out at night breaking a lock, the police said on Wednesday, 14 November.

A group of men got the 38-year-old woman in a car by force from a road near the home at Panchasayar in south-eastern fringes of the city and raped her in the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday.

Her family members lodged a complaint with the police but none was arrested as yet.

“The woman was forced to get inside a vehicle by some people when she was walking alone on the road in Panchashyar police station limits. She alleged that they took her to an unknown place, took her out on a vacant land and repeatedly raped her there,” a police officer said.

3. India vs Bangladesh: Greentop Likely for Pink Ball Test in Kolkata

The Eden Gardens may roll out a greentop, keeping in mind the pace-friendly pink ball as BCCI president Sourav Ganguly promised a “good wicket” for the historic day-night Test.

Days before the the pink-ball Test, the square in the middle looks green, quite similar to the outfield but the final appearance will be clear on the eve of the Test slated to begin from 22 November.

“It will be a good wicket. It all depends on how the curator prepares the wicket,” the BCCI president told reporters when asked if they are preparing a greentop. Ganguly further said the SG pink ball is different from kookaburra with a prominent seam, an indication that spinners will also have some role to play.

4. Fake Branded Bats, Footballs Flood Shops Across Kolkata

Cricket enthusiasts is the city are complaining of being duped after buying cheap versions of a leading cricket-bat manufacturer, whose products are used by top cricketers across the globe.

This has happened at a time when the city is hosting India’s first day and night cricket Test match.

But it is not the cricket bats alone. Footballs, that have used in ISL editions, are being faked and sold. The Enforcement Branch has now finally lodged two specific FIRs in this regard at the Amherst Street police station. Besides slapping IPC sections pertaining to cheating, the police have slapped several sections pertaining to infringement of the Copy Right Act.

5. Greenfield University to Become Darjeeling Hills University

The Greenfield University will be renamed as the Darjeeling Hills University, as West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar has given assent to a bill in this regard.

A Raj Bhavan statement on Tuesday said Dhankhar has given his nod to the Greenfield University (Amendment) Bill, 2019 that seeks to change the name of the Greenfield University to Darjeeling Hills University.

This change has been effected keeping in view the demand from local people to alter the name of the institute, it said.
