QKolkata: Cops at Firms Linked to Rao; CBI to Grill Top Cop Kumar

1. City Cops ‘Visit’ Firms Linked To Ex-CBI Interim Chief Rao’s Kin

The tit-for-tat between the Central Bureau of Investigation and Kolkata Police continued on Friday, with a city police team visiting the offices of Angela Mercantiles Private Limited, a financial firm that has been linked in the past with CBI additional director-general M Nageswara Rao’s relative.

The KP move came a day before its commissioner, Rajeev Kumar, was scheduled to be questioned by a CBI team in Shillong on Saturday.

Rao was the interim CBI director when a team from the central agency landed at KP commissioner Kumar’s Loudon Street residence last Sunday for a “special operation”, the action that sparked off an unprecedented stand-off between the Centre and the Bengal government. Chief minister Mamata Banerjee sat on an impromptu dharna for 70 hours till a Supreme Court order came that allowed the CBI to question Kumar but barred it from arresting him.

Kolkata Police chief Rajeev Kumar reached Shillong on Friday afternoon accompanied by top city cops and a legal adviser. Kumar was escorted by the Meghalaya Police to a guest house in Oakland, barely five kilometres from where he will appear before the CBI on Saturday morning.

The police chief was whisked away in one of the two cars waiting at the Shillong airport after Air India’s 85-minute direct flight to the Meghalaya capital landed at 3.35 pm. Kumar, who is accompanied by additional CP (1) Jawed Shamim and DCP (STF) Murlidhar Sharma, refused to speak to the media. Former Mizoram attorney general Biswajit Deb, now a Trinamool Congress observer, also accompanied him.

3. ‘Looters’, ‘Protectors’ Won’t Be Spared: PM

Prime Minister Narendra Modi went full blast against CM Mamata Banerjee and her party in north Bengal on Friday, saying that Bengal is headed for what happened in Tripura, where people brought an end to the long-serving communist regime and made way for BJP.

Explaining why he saw such a possibility, Modi cited the unprecedented response from the Bengal CM to the CBI probe into the Ponzi scam as part of which investigating officers reached the Kolkata Police commissioner’s residence. The CM had called the action a glaring example of “political vendetta”.

4. Mamata Taunts Manner Of Launch Of Circuit Bench

A wedding with a “bandwalah but no bride or groom” — that is how CM Mamata Banerjee described Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s inauguration of Calcutta High Court’s Jalpaiguri circuit bench on Friday, barely an hour after the event.

“Maddybabu (Modi) did not inform any high court judge or the state. He just sent a minute-by-minute programme that he would do it…the elections are approaching…. a great shame,” the chief minister said in Calcutta.

The Trinamul chief said the state had spent over “Rs 300 crore” for the bench. “We had given the land….The Calcutta High Court chief justice had given the inauguration date four months ago. Only a central notification was pending. Sadly, we couldn’t inaugurate it in August. Suddenly, the Centre decided to inaugurate it overnight.”

5. Trinamool Leaders File Police Complaint Against Modi

Trinamool leaders on Friday filed a police complaint against Prime Minister and National Highways Authority of India for mentioning their names in newspaper advertisement announcing a project to be flagged off by Narendra Modi without taking their consent.

Modi laid the foundation stone of the Falakata-Salsalabari section of NH31D on Friday.

The advertisement read that the prime minister would lay the foundation stone in the “august presence” of seven leaders.

Darjeeling MP S.S. Ahluwalia was the only BJP leader mentioned in the advertisement. The rest are all Trinamool legislators.

“The advertisement mentioned me as a guest without any consent. This has defamed me, following which I have filed a complaint at Alipurduar police station against the prime minister and the NHAI for necessary investigation,” said Sourav Chakraborty, the chairman of the Siliguri-Jalpaiguri Development Authority and the MLA of Alipurduar.
