1. Man Held for Selling Fake Tiger Skin

A youngster from Hyderabad, who was trying to sell the skin of an unknown animal by claiming it was tiger skin, was arrested by Rachakonda police at Chaitanyapuri on Tuesday, 16 April. The accused, Mohd Akheem, approached a businessman and offered to sell the skin for Rs 5 lakh.

Police nabbed him and seized the skin from him. On inquiry, police found that, Akheem, a resident of Asifnagar, had travelled to Araku in Andhra Pradesh. In the forest area, he found an abandoned hut and on entering the hut, he found the skin of an animal. From its appearance, he thought it belonged to a tiger and brought it along with him home. Police have sent the skin for analysis to ascertain which animal it belongs to.

2. Renewed Hope for Persons with Disabilities

For two days on Monday and Tuesday, Dr Zakir Hussain Lecture Hall complex at University of Hyderabad was teeming with youngsters with disabilities, who were seen walking out of classrooms lost in discussion on which skills they should to acquire to bag a job in top corporate companies and what should companies have to do to make work spaces disability-friendly.

The busy registration counter and the number of youngsters waiting for their turn to be interviewed resembled a job fair. But it was ‘Career Expo for Persons with Disabilities’ organised by Youth4Jobs in association with University of Hyderabad, which concluded on Tuesday.

3. Three Rohingyas Obtain Voter IDs, Held

Three Rohingyas who illegally migrated to the city from Myanmar and secured identity cards from the government by impersonating as Indians were arrested on Wednesday, 17 April, by the South Zone Task Force team.

According to the police, the accused, 25-year-old Mohd Ibrahim, 34-year-old Noor ul Ameen and 28-year-old Shaik Azhar hail from Buthidaung in Myanmar and had illegally migrated to India five years ago.

The accused travelled a distance of around 3,000 km to reach the city. They all entered India via Bangladesh.

4. Father Kills Two Kids in Sleep, Hurts One

A father allegedly killed his two children and injured another on Tuesday late night, 16 April, after his wife deserted him a month ago as he was addicted to alcohol and used to physically harass her. Cyberabad Additional DCP, Crime and other police officials rushed to the spot and the clues team collected the evidence and took the suspect into their custody.

The accused has been identified as E Kumar, a daily wage worker. The deceased were identified his son Akhil, 7, daughter Sharanya, 4, while his 10-year-old elder daughter Malleswari escaped with injuries. The accused used to suspect his wife’s fidelity and used to harass her saying that the children were not his.

5. Stir Over Ambedkar Statue Demolition Continues

The demolition of the Ambedkar statue at Punjagutta, a day before the Dalit leader’s 128th birth anniversary, triggered protests in various parts of the city. Several Dalit organisations staged agitations demanding the restoration of the statue. Madiga Reservation Porata Samiti (MRPS), meanwhile, has called for a hunger strike at Indira Park on Wednesday, 17 April.

On Tuesday, MRPS had staged a protest at Tank Bund. Calling the GHMC employees’ act of demolishing the statue unethical, the protestors raised slogans and demanded that the statue be reinstated.The protestors claimed that Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao has never shown up at any of the Ambedkar birth anniversary celebrations that were conducted over his five-year tenure.
