1. JNU Student Arrested for Stalking Senior; Gets Bail

A 19-year-old Jawaharlal Nehru University student was arrested for allegedly stalking and harassing his senior, the police said on Tuesday, 8 January. The victim and the accused are both undergraduate students, the police said.

The police control room had received a call at 2 p.m. on Monday against a man who had entered the girls’ hostel in JNU.

A police team went to the hostel, where the victim gave a written complaint. The woman claimed the accused had been stalking and threatening her, the police said.

2. Guj BJP Leader Shot Dead in Train, Kin Blame Party Colleague

Senior Gujarat BJP leader and former MLA Jayanti Bhanushali was shot dead by unidentified persons while he was travelling in a train in the early hours of Tuesday, police said.

His wife Madhuben and brother Shambhu later in the day alleged that Bhanushali's party colleague, Chhabil Patel, was behind the act.

The incident took place around 2 am on the Bhuj-Dadar Express train when Bhanushali (53) was returning to Ahmedabad from Bhuj town of Kutch district in Gujarat, police said.

Bhanushali had stepped down from the post of Gujarat BJP's vice president in July last year after a woman accused him of rape. However, the Gujarat High Court had quashed the case in August 2018 after the woman withdrew the complaint.

3. Head Constable Dead After Hit-And-Run at Check-Post, 1 Held

A 53-year-old Delhi Police head constable, posted at Dwarka’s Sector 23, was killed while manning a barricade on Monday, 7 January. Police said a car rammed the barricade, which hit Guljari Lal in the neck, killing him on the spot.

This happened despite the fact that the barricade was placed on a well-lit street, and the four policemen at the spot, including the victim, were wearing florescent jackets. Police added that the barricades had night reflectors and a blinker.

Lal was manning the Kapashera-Dwarka carriageway along with head constable Prakash Chand Meena.

4. Five of Family Found Dead at Home in UP’s Pilibhit

Five members of a family died in mysterious circumstances at Benipur village in Uttar Pradesh’s Pilibhit district on Monday night, police said.

The incident came to light on Tuesday morning. The victims, identified as Vegraj, 60, his wife Ramvati Devi, 50, son Nem Chandra, 32, daughter-in-law Mamta Devi, 28, and daughter Gayatri Kumari, 26, were found dead in their house by villagers. Vegraj was a retired railway employee and his son Nem Chandra was posted as a railway gateman at Bhojipura in Bareilly. Vegraj’s three other sons live in Etah, police said.

5. Delhi Man Stabbed Dozen Times, Left to Die

A 24-year-old man was chased and stabbed around 12 times, allegedly by four men in northwest Delhi’s Azadpur. Police are conducting raids to nab the accused.

According to police, the victim, Shanu Kumar, lived with his parents at MCD colony in Azadpur. He used to stay at JJ Colony in Shakurpur before he shifted to the new house a few months ago.

6. Noida: 2 Working With Phone Firm Held for ‘Obscene Texts to Colleague’

Two men working at a Noida-based Chinese mobile phone company were arrested on Tuesday for allegedly passing obscene comments at a woman employee.

Police claimed the woman had registered an FIR against the two men at the area’s designated police station a month ago.

An FIR was registered under IPC sections 504 (insult to invoke breach of peace), 506 (criminal intimidation) and section 67 (punishment for passing obscene comments) of the Information Technology Act. The accused, Suraj and Kishan, were arrested from the company’s gate in the afternoon. The complainant alleged that the two would pass offensive comments in the office premises, and often bully her. One of the accused also posted offensive content on the employee’s Facebook wall. We are questioning them further to ascertain more details,” said the station in-charge.

7. Man Wanted in Rape, Snatching Cases Arrested

A 27-year-old man, who was wanted in rape and snatching cases, was arrested in southwest Delhi's Bindapur, police said Tuesday, 8 January.

The accused was identified as Prince, a resident of Bindapur, they added.

On Saturday, police received information that Prince, who was wanted in a case of rape registered at Ranhola police station and also in a case of snatching registered at Bindapur police station, would come near Talab Park, Bindapur, to meet someone, Rajiv Ranjan, Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime), said.

8. Man Arrested in Virtual Currency Fraud

A 32-year-old man was arrested for allegedly duping people in the name of cryptocurrency or virtual money, police said Tuesday.

The accused has been identified as Rohit Kumar, a resident of Burari, they said.

The police received a complaint of cheating, money laundering and violation of Information Technology Act against Rohit Kumar, Amit Lakhanpal, Rajinder Kumar Shah and others.

"In the complaint, the victims alleged that Kumar and his associates, through social media and personal invitation, urged hundreds of Indians and NRIs to invest their money in Money Trade Coin (MTC) of Flinstone Technologies Pvt Ltd," A K Singla, Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime), said.
