1. 218 Cases Of Hate Crimes Reported In India In 2018, UP Tops Chart: Amnesty

Over 200 alleged cases of hate crimes were reported in 2018 against people from marginalised groups, especially Dalits, with Uttar Pradesh recording the highest number of such incidents for the third consecutive year, Amnesty India said in a new report on Tuesday, 5 March.

Amnesty India, releasing data recorded on its website, ‘Halt the Hate’, said hate crimes were reported against people from marginalised communities, which includes Dalits and Adivasis, members of racial or religious minority groups, transgender persons and migrants.

2. Calcutta High Court Extends Anticipatory Bail To Mukul Roy For Eight More Weeks

The Calcutta high court on Tuesday, 5 March, extended by eight-week protection from arrest to BJP leader Mukul Roy in connection with the killing of a Trinamool Congress MLA.

Hearing an anticipatory bail prayer by Roy, who was booked for conspiracy in the killing of Krishnaganj MLA Satyajit Biswas, the court directed that conditions imposed on Roy in the earlier order, including a ban on his entering Nadia district, would continue.

On 13 February, when Roy's application was moved before it, the court refused to grant anticipatory bail "at this stage" to the BJP leader, "keeping in mind the gravity of the crime" but granted protection to him from arrest till 7 March.

3. Woman Attacked With Acid As She Resists Rape; 1 Held, 2 At Large

A 35-year-old woman was attacked with acid by three men for resisting their alleged rape attempt at a village in East Champaran district, 190 km north of Patna, on Saturday night. She and her 10-year-old son also suffered burns in the attack.

This is the fourth acid attack in East Champaran in the past few months.

One of the men, Akash Kumar, was arrested. The other two are Prakash Kumar and former sarpanch Raghow Shaw.

The three men barged into the woman’s house with an intent to rape her, said an officer from Pakaridayal police station.

“Shaw tortured her, while the other two hurled acid on her and fled,” added the officer.

4. Delhi HC Slams Police Over Probe Into POCSO Case

The Delhi High Court has pulled up Delhi Police over the manner in which they investigate cases related to sexual violence against minors, saying it “shakes the faith of society in the system of administration of the criminal justice” in India.

A bench of Justice Siddharth Mridul and Justice Sangita Dhingra Sehgal expressed displeasure over the way in which Delhi Police’s investigating officer probed a case involving the alleged illegal confinement and sexual assault of a five-year-old boy by a bus conductor.

As per the complaint made by the minor’s parents, their child was allegedly confined in a classroom by the helper and sexually assaulted in 2015. Police had then booked the man for unnatural offence, wrongful confinement and under the POCSO Act. The accused denied the allegation and claimed he was falsely implicated. After the trial, a Delhi court acquitted him.

5. TN Woman Accuses Village Strongman Of Rape, Cops Dilute Case To Harassment

For over a month now, Usha (name changed) has been living with her family in Vadipatti town, 25 kilometres from Madurai.

The 36-year-old woman was forced to move out of her village Ramaiyanpatti, because she dared to file a complaint against a village strongman, Tirupathi, who is the husband of the Panchayat clerk.

Usha alleges that Tirupathi has been raping and sexually abusing her for four years, and when she finally spoke out about it, she faced taunts and harassment from other residents in the village.

6. Woman Crushed To Death By BEST Bus In Mumbai

A 21-year-old woman seated pillion on a motorcycle was crushed under the wheels of a BEST bus at Malad West on Tuesday, 5 March.

The bus driver has been booked by the police besides another biker who was involved in the mishap. At 8.55am, BEST bus no. 269 was plying from Borivali West bus station to Madh jetty.

At Vyaswadi in Malad, Nishant Parab, 22, and his wife, Mamta, came towards the bus on their motorcycle from the opposite direction.

"The motorcycle hit the bus from the rear side, causing Nishant to lose control. His wife fell off the two-wheeler and came under the wheels on the right side of the bus. She was rushed to the Jankalyan municipal hospital with severe head injuries. Doctors declared her dead at the hospital. Nishant did not suffer any injuries," a BEST officer said.

The police took the BEST driver, Popat Sawant, into custody in the morning. He was later released on bail.

7. West Bengal: Class 10 Board Exams Question Papers Leaked For Sixth Day In A Row

Question papers of Madhyamik examination were reportedly leaked on social media for the sixth consecutive day on Tuesday, shortly after the tests commenced.

As was the case in the past five days, images of the physical science question paper were found to be circulated on WhatsApp, drawing sharp criticism from opposition parties in West Bengal. Madhyamik, the Class 10 school leaving examination, is conducted by the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education (WBBSE).

“For 6 consecutive days, #question leaked in Madhyamik examination. Never happened in #WB. A devastating situation. A destroyed education scenario,” CPI(M) MLA Sujan Chakraborty said in a tweet.

“Stop tall talks. Feel ashamed @MamataOfficial,” he added.

8. Foreigners Held For Cheating Women On Matrimonial Sites

Four foreigners, two of them brothers, were arrested for allegedly duping women of money after creating fake profiles on matrimonial websites and posing as potential grooms, the police said on Tuesday, 5 March.

Police said the arrested men were from Nigeria and were staying illegally in India after their visas expired. Two fake Mali passports, which two of them had procured from their Indian contacts, were seized along with three laptops and 11 mobile phones. The arrested persons Raymond, 28, his brother Melody and their accomplices Kareem Ridwan, 27, and Osas Clifford, 28.

Deputy commissioner of police (cyber crime unit, CyPAD) Anyesh Roy said they created fake profiles by collecting information and pictures of random persons from networking sites. They used to contact women registered on these websites.

9. Gangster Runs Extortion Racket From Rohini Jail, Delhi

Gangster Keshav Kakkar, who is in judicial custody, has allegedly been running an extortion racket out of Rohini Jail.

Last week, a Karol Bagh-based businessman approached the police and four of Kakkar’s men were arrested on Monday. Cops have found that following Kakkar’s calls to city businessmen demanding protection money, his men would visit the target’s office or home and open fire to threaten him.

The location of the mobile phone tower used to make the calls has been confirmed to be near Rohini Jail. Cops will now seek custody of Kakkar from court to interrogate him. The incident comes to light shortly after jailed gangster Rahul Kala was found to be making extortion video calls from Tihar Jail. Delhi Police is going to take up the matter with Tihar officials soon.
