Kidnappings Rise, Murders & Rapes Dip; UP Sees 10% of Total Crimes: 2017 NCRB Report

The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) on Monday released its long-awaited report on 2017 crime statistics, showing a 3.7% rise in registration of cases over those booked the previous year, with the number of rape cases being the lowest since 2013 and offences against the state rising sharply.

Uttar Pradesh accounted for 10.1% of the total crimes under the Indian Penal Code (IPC). However, the report, prepared for the period between January 1 and December 31 in 2017, said that states such as UP and Delhi could not be statistically compared to other regions as they had started online registrations of cases, leading to an additional spike.

In the 2016 report, the increase in the total number of cases was 2.6% over 2015.

9. Delhi Man Convicted 15 Years Ago For Raping Woman Acquitted By Top Court

Fifteen years after a man was convicted by a trial court for raping a woman, the Supreme Court has acquitted him saying the "victim" was not a "trustworthy witness" as she was "blowing hot and cold" and changing her stand from time to time.

The top court said this while setting aside the judgements of the Andhra Pradesh High Court as well as the trial court which had convicted the man.

In 2011, the high court had upheld the September 2004 verdict of the trial court which had convicted and sentenced him to 10 years jail.

A bench of justices Deepak Gupta and Surya Kant said the trial court had "virtually convicted" the man while relying upon statements recorded by the police and had totally bypassed the statements made on oath before the court.
