1. Leaky Roof, the Latest Trouble for Chennai Airport

Chennai airport is conducting an audit of its roof after rainwater started leaking in three places during rains that lashed the city late on Wednesday. Airport director S Sreekumar told that the roof is a decade old and as soon as leak started, officials were asked to stop it.

This comes after DMK MP Kanimozhi tweeted picture of plastic containers to collect rainwater. “First it was the ceiling falling. Now the roof has turned into showers. Plastic containers have been placed to collect water dripping from above, due to rains,” she wrote.

2. Chennai Reservoirs Receive Inflows Equivalent to 10 Days’ Supply

City reservoirs that have remained bone dry for more than four months have now received inflows equivalent to 10 days of Chennai’s water supply following the heavy downpour on Thursday. However, there has been a dip in inflows since Friday morning, as rain has reduced over catchment areas.

According to officials of the Water Resources Department, the total storage of the four lakes climbed from a mere 15 million cubic feet on Thursday morning to 273 mcft on Friday, due to heavy rainfall. The reservoirs at Red Hills and Cholavaram received up to 600 cusecs (cubic feet per second) of floodwater and this dipped by half on Friday morning.

3. Madras HC Reserves Order on Plea Against CJ Tahilramani's Transfer

Vijaya Tahilramani tendered her resignation on 6 September, after she was transferred to the Meghalaya High Court.

A division bench of the Madras High Court has reserved its orders on the maintainability of a PIL petition seeking to restrain the secretary to the President of India from giving effect to the proposal of the Supreme Court Collegium to transfer Chief Justice Vijaya K Tahilramani to Meghalaya High Court.

The bench of Justices M Sathyanarayanan and N Seshasayee reserved the orders on Friday after listening to the brief argument of the counsel for M Karpagam, the petitioner. Vijaya Tahilramani tendered her resignation on 6 September, after she was transferred to the Meghalaya High Court. The Supreme Court collegium rejected the request to reconsider her transfer to Meghalaya.

With the storage in the reservoir steadily rising, the AP government is likely to discharge water into the Kandaleru-Poondi canal on Tuesday. The reservoir now has a storage of 8.61 thousand million cubic feet, and received an inflow of 10,000 cusecs on Friday.

Officials of the Water Resources Department said the storage would be stepped up. Water is expected to be discharged for both Andhra Pradesh’s needs and Chennai’s water supply.

5. Fitness Boosters, Cigarettes Seized at Chennai Airport

Customs officials at the Chennai International Airport on Thursday seized Rs 35 lakh worth body building supplements and cigarettes. Sources said based on specific information, Boom Murugan (36) and Mohamed Ali (37), both from Madurai and Hariharan (31) of Tiruchy, who had arrived from Dubai via Colombo by a Sri Lankan flight, were intercepted at the exit of the arrival hall, on suspicion of carrying gym and health supplements.

They appeared nervous, and on questioning they gave evasive answers. On a check of their baggage, all three were found to have concealed gym supplements among their personal effects.
