1. Whitefield to Soon get Biggest Gold Refinery

India’s largest gold refinery will come up in Bengaluru’s Whitefield before the year-end.
Being set up by city-based Rajesh Exports, one of the world’s largest gold refiners, at a cost of Rs 350 crore, the facility will have a capacity to process 600 tonnes per annum, which is about 67% of the country’s total gold consumption per year.

The domestic consumption of gold is close to 900 tonnes per year, out of which 90% is imported.

2. Noted Kannada Theatre Artiste, Film Actor Master Hirannaiah Dies at 84

Noted theatre artiste, Sandalwood actor, satirist and TV actor Hirannaiah passed away in Bengaluru.

Noted theatre artiste, Sandalwood actor, satirist and TV actor Hirannaiah passed away in Bengaluru on Thursday, 2 May. Known to his peers as Master Hirannaiah, the veteran actor was admitted to BGS Hospital in Bengaluru four days ago. However, he did not respond to treatment and passed away on Thursday morning. He was 84 years old and is survived by his wife and son.

Born in Mysuru on 15 February, 1934, Hirannaiah is one of the most well-known Kannada theatre personalities. His father K Hirannaiah too was a director of Kannada plays and had his own theatre company – K Hirannaiah Mitra Mandali.

3. Polls to 63 ULBs to be Held on 29 May

The elections to 63 urban local bodies (ULBs) in Karnataka will be held on 29 May and the results will be declared on 31 May, the state poll panel announced on Thursday, 2 May. These do not include the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and other city corporations.

P Sreenivasachari, who heads the State Election Commission, said the 29 May polls will cover eight city municipal councils, 33 town municipal councils and 22 town panchayats. The model code of conduct is now in effect.

4. Ketamine Maker Held From Home; 26kg of Drug Seized

Ketamine is banned in India and is manufactured only under the special provisions of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act.

Can you imagine a neighbour of yours silently manufacturing a banned drug in his house and selling it across the globe? Residents of Kengeri Satellite Town were in for a shock when sleuths from the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) arrested a man from the locality and seized around 26kg of ketamine and a manufacturing machine from him.

Shivaraj Urs from Kengeri Satellite Town told cops he had a similar ketamine-manufacturing machine in Hyderabad as well. His client, J Kannan, who had come from Chennai to collect the drug, was also nabbed. On the night of30 April, NCB sleuths traced the residence of Urs. “Acting on credible information, we seized 25.8kg of ketamine placed in a gunny bag of rice, which was kept in a trolley near a movie theatre in Majestic.”

5. Indiranagar Chit Fund Swindles Rs 25 Crore

As many as 150 investors of a private chit fund in Indiranagar have been duped to the tune of at least Rs 25 crore.

After several complaints, the deputy registrar of Co-operative Societies registered a case of fraud against Indiranagar Chit Funds Private Limited, the firm in question.  A departmental source said over 150 people had invested several crores at the Indiranagar firm in the last few years. Investors sensed something amiss when the company began delaying payments and promised returns.

With no sign of payments even after furnishing the last instalments, complaints from investors started pouring in at the Registrar of Co-operative Societies and Chit Funds.
