QBengaluru: 1 Lakh Cops on Duty for LS Polls on 18 April & More

1. Around one lakh men on security duty for polls

The Karnataka state police have made elaborate security arrangements for the polling to Lok Sabha elections scheduled for 18 April in the state. As many as 90,997 police personnel will be deployed across the state at all polling booths.

As the strength of police personnel available in the state for poll duty is only 49,476 the police department has roped in services of Home Guards, Civil Defence personnel, jail wardens and forest guards/watchers this time, to make up for the shortage.

The police department has identified 11,992 booths as critical in the state and has deployed extra security forces for these booths.

2. Education Dept Posts Aadhaar Details of 5k Students on Website

In a major data leak, the state education department put out on its website the Aadhaar numbers of 5,375 meritorious students who bagged the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship (NMMS) in March 2019.

The Department of State Education Research and Training (DSERT), a wing of the education department, also put out the mobile numbers and caste details of all students from the state chosen for the central government scholarship. It provides Rs 12,000 annually for five years to class 8 students from aided and government schools who qualify for the NMMS entrance exam.

3. I-T Raids on Aides of JD(S) Leaders in Hassan, Mandya

Simultaneous raids by the Income Tax Department have been going on since early on Tuesday, 16 April morning. 

Two days before the state goes to polls in the second phase, the Income Tax department conducted simultaneous raids in Mandya, Hassan and Bengaluru on Tuesday, 16 April. The searches are being conducted on the residences of close allies of JD(S) leaders CS Puttaraju, Revanna and DC Thammanna.

While Revanna is Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy’s brother and an MLA from Hassan, CS Puttaraju is the Mandya MP and Thammanna is the Maddur MLA.

According to ANI, raids were carried out at two different locations of Zilla Panchayat President and JD(S)'s Nagarathna Swamy and another member of the Zilla Parishad, in Mandya's Maddur early on Tuesday.

4. Airfares Soar, B’luru-Mum Sector Worst hit

Domestic and international airfares have surged for April and May owing to scores of Jet Airways flights getting cancelled.

Among popular domestic routes, the maximum increase has been recorded on Bengaluru-Mumbai, Bengaluru-Hyderabad and Bengaluru-Delhi routes in April, according to figures provided by online travel agents.

While domestic airfares for services from Benglauru have gone up by nearly 18% this April as compared to the same period in 2018, international fares have shown a 52% jump, show statistics provided by travel agent Ixigo.

The rise in fares was most pronounced between Bengaluru and Mumbai (29%), followed by Bengaluru and Hyderabad (25%) and Bengaluru and Kolkata (20%), according to Ixigo.

5. Landlord’s son Gropes Woman After Power Supply Plaint

A private firm employee filed a sexual harassment complaint against her landlord’s son for allegedly groping her, when she complained about the power supply at her rented home in RT Nagar.


On Thursday, 11 April, the 25-year-old victim found the power supply disconnected by her landlord. Around 10 pm, she went to the landlord’s house in the same building to inquire about the same. She alleged that Adithya, the landlord’s son, groped and assaulted her.
