Chandigarh, April 4: Controversy erupted after Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal had to clear bills of more than 3 crores of lawyer Ram Jethmalani who later said he will fight for free. On the other side, the Punjab government on Tuesday has decided to raise the fee of top lawyers from 2.8 lakh to 3.3 lakh, that is the price per appearance.

The top lawyers are placed in the tray of A1 category and will now be paid as per the new laid out rates, said a report on News 18. Apart from Jethmalani and Abhishek Manu Singhvi, other lawyers who fall in the A1 category are  Fali S Nariman, Dushyant Dave, KK Venugopal, Indira Jaising, and Gopal Subramaniam and others. The Amarinder Singh-led Punjab government has clearly mentioned that advocates who conduct cases outside Punjab will not be entertained on monthly basis.

The Kejriwal controversy erupted after a Times Now report said that the Delhi CM had requested Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal of the national capital to clear the payment of approximately Rs 3.86 crores for Ram Jethmalani. This gave birth to controversy and many BJP leaders accused Kejriwal of request Governor to use public money for his own personal gains. Delhi CM is defending himself against BJP veteran Arun Jaitley in the defamation case filed by the latter.

Post the controversy, Jethmalani cleared the air by saying he will fight Delhi CM’s case for free as Kejriwal cannot afford it. ” I charge only the rich but for poor I work for free. All this is instigated by Mr.Jaitley who’s afraid of my cross-examination-Jethmalani,” lawyer Jethmalani told news agency ANI. “I will appear for free and will treat Kejriwal as one of my poor clients,” he further added.
