Punjab: Arhtiyas go on a strike; to shutdown grain markets post-Income-Tax raids

Expressing resentment over the Income-Tax raids on their premises, the Arthiyas (commission agents) in Punjab have decided to shut down all grain markets from tomorrow until December 25 in the state. The Arhtiyas Association claimed that the raids are the central government’s pressure tactics against Arthiyas for supporting protesting Kisans.

The Arhtiyas Association have demanded the return of all account books seized by the I-T officials and announced to gherao Income Tax officials if they continue to conduct more raids. Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh has raised strong objections over the I-T raids and claimed that premises of several big Arhtiyas of Punjab were searched within a span of just four days of issuing notices without waiting for a response.
