Probe after woman dies in hospital

Malda, Jan. 18: The relatives of a woman admitted to the Malda Medical College and Hospital filed a complaint with the principal of the institute alleging negligence by the doctors and nursing staff after the patient died following a Caesarean delivery today.

Julie Sarkar, 19, was married to Bablu Sarkar of Uttar Purbatuli in Ratua over a year ago. "I work for a private firm in Delhi and returned home after my wife's condition got serious. On Wednesday, she began having labour pain and I took her to the health centre at Araidanga. There I was told the baby had to be delivered surgically. So, I admitted her to the Malda Medical College and Hospital," said Bablu, 26.

"There was no doctor on Wednesday and Thursday and my daughter was left unattended," said Julie's father, Sachin Mondol. Ujjwal Kumar Bhadra, the principal of the medical college, said: "I have ordered an inquiry into the charges." The new-born is in a serious condition.
