Priyadarshan reveals the truth behind choosing Akshay Kumar as the best actor at the National Awards 2017.

Priyadarshan was a part of the jury at the 64th National Film Awards. The south filmmaker was lashed for playing a role in Akshay Kumar’s national Award win. The whole nation cannot believe that Akshay Kumar was recognised for his performance in Rustom. Fans started trolling the actor for his victory and some even claimed that  Priyadarshan might have some connection with Akshay Kumar winning the most coveted award of the nation. Despite having contenders like Aamir Khan (Dangal), Amitabh Bachchan (Pink) and Manoj Bajpayee (Aligarh), the jury chose to honour Akshay Kumar instead.

Filmmaker Priyadarshan in his answer said, “Akshay Kumar deserved the award and so we gave it to him. There was a total of 38 jury members with me on this. How can you question the decision of so many people? Ramesh Sippy headed the jury last year. When he gave Best Actor to Amitabh Bachchan for Piku why didn’t anyone question him?” (ALSO READ: Twinkle Khanna gets emotional after Akshay Kumar’s win at National Film Awards 2017! Aamir’s performance in Dangal was applauded and he got people choice awards for the film too. So didn’t Aamir deserve a national award? To which the director said, “Aamir recently said that he wouldn’t personally accept the award if he is given one. If I remember, Aamir didn’t attend the ceremony when he won the award for Taare Zameen Par (The film bagged the National Film Award for Best Film on Family Welfare in 2008). So, why spoil it for some other actor who stood as good a chance of winning the award.”

According to reports, a few years ago Priyadarshan had approached Aamir with a film on AIDS but since things didn’t work out he went to Akshay. So is the project still on? Priyadarshan reveals, “Neither Aamir nor Akshay did the film. We made it in Tamil (titled Sila Samayangalil) last year with Prakash Raj.” (ALSO READ: Akshay Kumar won the National Film Award for both Rustom and Airlift and even he didn’t know!)

Is Priyadarshan planning to reunite with Akshay Kumar in future and the filmmaker says, “No, I am not making any film with Akshay at the moment.” There are reports stating that Akshay bagged the award for both Airlift and Rustom. But Priyadarshan refuses the claims saying, “The jury considered him for both films but since the rules specify that he can only win for one film, we decided on Rustom.”

Priyadarshan has an apt reply to why Hansal Mehta’s Aligarh didn’t win any award and Dangal was honoured with only one award at the National Awards 2017. The filmmaker says, “This year regional films, the Marathi, Bengali and Malayalam films, in particular, were far better than the ones made in Bollywood. Most of them were not just entertaining potboilers but touched on significant social issues too.” (ALSO READ: National Film Awards 2017: Akshay Kumar wins Best Actor award; twitter blames it on a possible bias!)
