A 23-year-old woman was infused with HIV positive blood at a government hospital in Tamil Nadu's Sivakasi district after a lapse in the screening process. According to The News Minute, the incident came to light when the donor of the infected blood was told about his condition.
The pregnant woman was admitted in the hospital in Sattur after she was found to be anaemic and while she was being treated at the hospital, she was given a blood transfusion with HIV positive blood by accident.
The mishap occurred due to human error on the part of lab technician at the hospital who was responsible for screening donated blood, according to a health official. The officials of the state health department said that the technician has been suspended.
Donor Discovers He’s HIV Positive
Earlier this month, a 21-year-old man came to know that he was HIV positive after undergoing a routine treatment for a visa application. He then immediately informed the doctors that he had participated in a blood donation drive.
After the health department officials were alerted, the donated blood was tracked down and it was found that the blood was transfused in a 23-year-old pregnant woman.
Dr Sentill Raj IAS told TNM the woman will be monitored and screened regularly and the officials are taking all the necessary steps.
Health Dept Orders Inspection of Blood Banks
"All efforts are being taken to contain the situation and to make sure that no one else is affected. All blood transfusions from the Sattur hospital are currently being ordered to stop. Blood will be sourced from other facilities in the meantime," Raj said.
All the government and private hospitals' blood banks in Virudhunagar district are under inspection after the order of health department. All the blood in 14 hospitals will be screened again.
