A photograph of Bollywood couple Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone, in which they can be seen wearing saffron scarves on which ‘Vote for BJP’ is inscribed, has gone viral on social media platforms. The caption accompanying the image reads: ‘Kamal ka button dabaa kar, desh ki tarakki mein bhagidaar banein’ (‘Press the Lotus button and participate in the nation’s progress’). It is a call to people to vote for the Bharatiya Janata Party. This picture is posted by many Facebook pages and has been shared by thousands of users.
The post seems to be aimed at showing that the Bollywood superstars are actually endorsing the BJP and its prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi’s and urging the people to vote for him and his party.
However, a quick search on the Internet shows that the photograph is a poor attempt at confusing people with photoshopped images. In reality, the photograph was actually clicked on November 30, 2018, when Ranveer and Deepika visited the Siddhivinayak Temple in Mumbai after their marriage.
They were wearing saffron scarves on that occasion, but there was no inscription on them supporting BJP. The photo that has now gone viral is aimed at luring their fans to vote for the BJP.
Social media is suffused with photoshopped images, fake news and edited video clips aimed at misleading people. With the election process beginning in India such fake posts will rise in number. Readers are urged to verify the authenticity of the posts and not fall for fake news.
