POLL: Should there be a minimum educational qualification for candidates?

BJP leader Smriti Irani has submitted to the Election Commission that she did not complete her graduation from Delhi University. In her affidavit for the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, Irani had reportedly said she graduated from the university in 1994, triggering a row over the authenticity of her claim. There have been doubts cast, too, over the educational qualifications of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and also, over the decades, several cases of unlettered leaders being elected to Parliament.

Do you think there should be a minimum educational qualification for candidates to contest General Elections? Bear in mind that India is a massive and still relatively underdeveloped country in which millions don’t have access to free, quality education. Would it be fair to deprive the marginalised sections of society from having a say in the democratic process just because they don’t come from privilege and cannot afford a decent education?
