PM Modi has stopped talking about corruption, says Rahul Gandhi on last day of Gujarat campaign

In his first press conference after being named Congress president, Rahul Gandhi launched a series of attacks on Modi and the BJP.

A day after he was named Congress president, Rahul Gandhi today attacked both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over what he said was their silence on corruption.

"Earlier Modiji used to talk about corruption everywhere. But since we raised the issues of Jay Shah (BJP President Amit Shah's son) and the Rafale defence deal (with France), he stopped talking about corruption," the Congress leader said.

"The PM is either talking about Congress or himself during his public meetings," he said. Rahul is in Gujarat today campaigning for the second and final phase of the high-stakes Assembly election.

Rahul said his party was confident of taking power in Gujarat and said the BJP was on a losing wicket. "The BJP has lost its position," Gandhi told the media, a day after he was named the President of the country's oldest political party.

"After the first phase voting in the state (December 9), we are confident that we are going to form the government here," he said.

When questioned about his visits to temples during the election campaigning, Rahul asked if it was wrong. "Whenever I went to a temple I just prayed for a 'Sunehra Bhavishya' for the people of Gujarat, a better development here. Is it wrong to go to a temple?," Rahul said.

Rahul also visited Jagannath Temple in Ahmedabad in the morning, his 28th such visit in 90 days.

Criticising the government's decision to ban Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes, Rahul said that demonetisation was Modi government's first mistake and "Gabbar Singh Tax" the second.

Speaking about development in the state of Gujarat he said, "In last 22 years Modi ji and Rupani ji have initiated only one-sided development here, the one only for 5-10 people. Not everyone has been given their rights."

Rahul assured that all the decisions in Gujarat will be made in consultation with the people of Gujarat. Rahul Gandhi stressed that Congress is confident about the election results in Gujarat after the first phase is over.

Rahul Gandhi also said that the way jokes were made on Manmohan Singh is unacceptable as he was the Prime Minister of the country. He also stressed that he will never talk about PM Modi in the same manner as that would mean disrespecting the position of the Prime Minister.

Thanking the people of Gujarat, Rahul Gandhi said that he received love and respect wherever he went in the state during his election campaign.

The second and final phase of the Gujarat Assembly election is due on Thursday. The results will be out on December 18.
