Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Kolkata LIVE updates: Prime Minister Narendra Modi met West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in Kolkata Saturday. After meeting the Prime Minister, Banerjee said she asked the PM to withdraw CAA, NPR and NRC. Modi told her to come to New Delhi and discuss the matter, she said.
After meeting Modi, Banerjee went straight to TMC students wing sit-in demonstration in the city against CAA, where she reiterated her stand that the new Citizenship law would never be implemented in Bengal. "The CAA notification will only remain on paper but will never be implemented. We will not implement the CAA...This is unconstitutional, illegal and wrong," Banerjee said while addressing the rally.
On the other hand, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated a sound and light show at the Howrah Bridge. Before that, while addressing a programme at the Old Currency Building in Kolkata, PM Modi said several important aspects of the country's history were overlooked by historians who wrote about it after Independence without delving deeply into the subject. One of the key aspects of nation-building is to preserve the country's heritage, he said.
Earlier in the day, Students protested against Modi's visit to the city. Jadavpur University students also protested against the JNU violence and Modi's visit.
