Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane has backed goalkeeper Denis Onyango to bag the 2018 Caf African Player of Year award.
Mosimane said the Uganda international deserves the accolade, saying there is no goalkeeper better than the Brazilians’ shot-stopper in the entire continent.
“If you want to play the [Africa] Cup of Nations, [Caf] Champions League [then] Denis (Onyango) qualifies and he leaves zero behind,” said Mosimane to the media.
“(He is present in) crosses, physical presence if you know what I mean. He is a monster and a typical African goalkeeper, how many times have I said this?” quizzed the current PSL winning coach.
“It's his space and you need to tell me who is better than him in Africa because I watch the Champions League,” challenged the coach.
Mosimane compared the former Bidvest Wits and SuperSport United keeper with the likes of Al Ahly, USM Alger and Wydad Casablanca keepers, but said they are not better than the lanky keeper.
“I watch everybody, you can go to Esperance, Al Ahly, Wydad Casablanca, USM Alger you can go to ES Setif, you can go on and on, but Denis is number one in Africa,” he said.
“And I think if he is nominated for the goalkeeper of the year, he is going to win it. It won't be the first time. I think he was the first goalkeeper to win it, but let's see,” concluded Mosimane.
Onyango has been nominated for the Caf Player of the Year among the likes of Senegal’s Sadio Mane, Egypt’s Mohamed Salah and Nigeria’s Ahmed Musa.
Moreover, the Cranes skipper has led his country to their second Africa Cup of Nations qualification which will take place next year, and he is one of the players touted to walk away with the gong.
Apart from this nomination, Onyango was voted as the best player in Africa over a year ago after helping the Brazilians lift their maiden Caf Champions League trophy.
The awards are set to be hosted on January 8 2018 in Senegal, and Onyango has former teammate Percy Tau nominated in the same category.
