Yesterday, Uttarakhand witnessed its first-ever life-threatening glacial outburst near the Chamoli district. Or rather, that’s what people have come to call it as there is still no evidence to claim that it was an outburst.

Many are still arguing that it could have been the result of an avalanche, flooding or the repercussions of unwarranted development, considering how there is no known glacial lake nearby.

In a region known for its volatility, a hydroelectric project was under construction – Rishiganga Tapovan hydro power plant. The villagers in the area, who pioneered the Chipko movement, had already filed petitions and warned the government about constructing the dam. They were given no attention.

It is disheartening to learn that the incident has risked the lives of many people and workers who were part of the construction. Here are some devastating pictures from the outburst and the rescue operations to give you a sneak-peak into the recent disaster.

These are the images of the flooding of the Dhauli Ganga river, which consequently damaged the ongoing construction of the dam and endangered the people who were working on it

Rescue operations were undertaken quickly. Army personnel arrived at the scene to handle the situation. Following is the image of a worker being rescued from the Tapovan Tunnel.

The rescue operations are still underway as many are trapped in the floods. Scientists are yet to conclusively determine the cause of the outbreak, and have arrived at the site for further investigation. The Prime Minister has announced a compensation to all the grieving and affected families.
