India's most literate states and union territories

Kerala: This south Indian state enjoys the highest literacy rate in the country with 93.91 per cent, according to the 2011 census. According to the Daily Pioneer, more than 90 percent of Kerala's rural population has access to a primary school in the one kilometer diameter of their residence. The state was among the ten states and union territories to have achieved its literacy target (above 85 per cent) set by the Planning Commission by the year 2011-12.

According to a United Nations report, more than 70 crore people all over the world are unaware of the three Rs. They cannot read, write or do simple arithmetic. Most of them are from India, China, Pakistan and Bangladesh. Although with a literacy rate of 74 percent, India has made steady progress in curbing illiteracy over the years, India is still far away from achieving total literacy.
