Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party chief and former cricketer Imran Khan tied the knot for the third time with his spiritual guide Bushra Maneka in a low-key ceremony in Lahore.
The photos, released by PTI's media wing, show Khan, 65, in nikah photos with his newest wife:
Last month, media reports quoted Khan as saying:
"I would like to reiterate that every time I met her, with family and alone, she has been in purdah (veil). My interest in her lies in the fact that I have not seen or met anyone with her level of spirituality." - Imran Khan
Twitter ended up divided over if the purdah, whether voluntary or not, is violative of women’s rights.
Glorifying the Purdah a Sexist Proposition?
No guarantee who’s under that hijab. Could well be Javed Miandad. A picture of repression and patriarchy. https://t.co/pQNFf2ch5m— Brown Sahiba (@Rajyasree) February 19, 2018
I haven't quite figured out why Imran Khan had to tweet these awful photos.— Rana Safvi رعنا राना (@iamrana) February 19, 2018
Jab pardah hai to tasweer ki kya zaroorat hai
Everything that’s wrong with the hijab in one pic. Can you believe she’s literally invisible in her own marriage pics. Patriarchy conditions you to agree to its terms so subtly you think it’s your choice https://t.co/oNnBE5dktF— Ruchika Sharma (@tishasaroyan) February 19, 2018
Only one thing: what's being portrayed in Imran Khan's wedding photos with Bushra Maneka is not "hijab" but "purdah", or the practice of seclusion that South Asian Muslim women have adopted (lots of history and patriarchy behind it). https://t.co/xTlD4WFs9G— Bina Shah (@BinaShah) February 19, 2018
Is it true imran said the highest form of piety is a woman in purdah? If true he’s certified .... we have women who are already shackled now a politician wants 50% of the pop in pious purdah ? What kind of world does he live in?— Nilofer Afridi Qazi (@ninoqazi) January 14, 2018
On the Other Hand, Freedom of Choice?
Big shoutout to all the woke Pak Tweeters who are making fun of Imran Khan's wife because she covers her face. Yay for you.— Sabbah Haji Baji (@imsabbah) February 18, 2018
Now this is so below the belt. Hat, Dupatta or a veil... Why is it even a topic of mockery?? Slagging off someone's appearance is a whole new level of dogmatism! https://t.co/T7cuMATA2H— Saadia Afzaal (@SaadiaAfzaal) February 18, 2018
I'm against forcing veil on women, but let me say the obvious here: IK's new wife Bushra has been in veil for years. This is what she decided to be, it's HER choice. And just as we laud women for owning their bodies & revealing what they like, learn to respect those who cover up— Mehr Tarar (@MehrTarar) February 18, 2018
I wrote in 2013 that most of our so-called liberals are awful bigots.— Mehr Tarar (@MehrTarar) February 19, 2018
Now: most of our so-called feminists - with due respect to real feminists who are doing great work for gender equality here & elsewhere - are misogynostic to the core.
Trashing Bushra's veil is just one example
Is Imran Khan trying to ditch his past ‘playboy’ image with his multiple wives, and cultivate a more religious, conservative one for political ends through virtue-signalling via his new wife?
(The Quint, in association with BitGiving, has launched a crowdfunding campaign for an 8-month-old who was raped in Delhi on 28 January 2018. The baby girl, who we will refer to as 'Chhutki', was allegedly raped by her 28-year-old cousin when her parents were away. She has been discharged from AIIMS hospital after undergoing three surgeries, but needs more medical treatment in order to heal completely. Her parents hail from a low-income group and have stopped going to work so that they can take care of the baby. You can help cover Chhutki's medical expenses and secure her future. Every little bit counts. Click here to donate.)
