One of the best things about award ceremonies is the unpredictable things that happen and last night's Golden Globes delivered one of these moments before the show even began.

Laura Dern was being interviewed on the red carpet when her live chat was gatecrashed by some unexpected (but definitely welcome) guests; Paul Rudd, Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban.

While chatting to E! New’s Ryan Seacrest, Dern, who has had an impressive year starring in Marriage Story, Cold Pursuit. Big Little Lies and Little Women, joked that she was not sure of what table to sit at during the 77th annual ceremony, which was hosted by Ricky Gervais.

"The film is nominated, Marriage Story. Big Little Lies. Half the room is part of the people you work with, it's filled with people you work with every day," Seacrest said.

"It is an amazing night," Dern replied. "We also have Little Women representing, so it's a big night for all of us."

She then joked: “It's gonna get ugly in there. The doors will close. It's going to be a lot of serious do-si-do."

And as if on cue, her Big Little Lies co-star Kidman walked into the shot to hug her friend.

"You're like having to table-hop," Kidman her co-star. "She should be at every table."

Not long after that Seacrest asked Kidman where her husband, Urban, was.

The singer promptly appeared to answer the question himself by becoming the interview's second gatecrasher.

Urban then mentioned Rudd’s name and he - yes, you guessed it - sheepishly joined the trio as the giggled about the spontaneity of the situation.

"The cast of Big Little Lies!" Dern jokingly announced as Rudd joined them.

"How much fun did we have on that?" Rudd quipped.

"You were so good in it," Nicole teased Rudd with Seacrest teasing, "I didn't even recognise you in it you were so good.”

"I look a lot like Adam Scott [Big Little Lies actor] in that show everyone tells me," Rudd laughed.

Dern collected the Best Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture for her role as divorce lawyer in Marriage Story.

Big Little Lies missed out on the Best TV Drama category award, as HBO’s Succession walked away with the price.
