Karnataka: Woman Commits Suicide After Being Harassed by Right-wing Activists For Befriending Muslim Man

A case has been registered under 306 (Abetment to suicide) of the IPC.

Patna, Dec 14: A 15 year old boy who was forcefully married to his widowed sister-in law on Monday killed himself. According to report, the boy was resisting the marriage, but his and the widow’s family forced him into the marriage for financial gains.

Identified as Mahadev Kumar Das, a class IX student, a resident of Vinobanagar village in Gaya, the victim’s neighbours alleged he was forced into wedlock by both the families, which severely disturbed him. According to the police, Mahadev committed suicide on Wednesday.

Mahadev’s elder brother Santosh Kumar Das died in 2013 after he was electrocuted while working at a shop. Following his death, Santosh’s family received a compensation of Rs. 80,000. Santosh’s widow Ruby Devi’s family claimed their daughter should claim the whole amount of compensation. But reportedly, both the families reached an agreement and decided to give her Rs. 27,000 and marry her off with their younger son Mahadev, Indian Express reported.

According to the police, Mahadev always treated his sister-in law like his mother. Tekari DSP Manish Kumar quoted by The Indian Express said although no suicide note has been found, the boy’s neighbours claimed he resisted his family members but was forced into the marriage. “It is a case of child marriage and abetment to suicide,” he added. A case has been registered against the family, reports claimed.
