Fabrication or misrepresentation of images and videos is one of the most common modes of disseminating fake news. A thread with such misinformation, aimed at communalising Kolkata and West Bengal, went viral on social media recently.

The thread carries images of green flags – with a crescent moon and a star –apparently hoisted in West Bengal’s Domjur in Howrah.

The message with the post has at least two versions. One of the versions, written in Bangla, says, “Pakistan’s flag in the heart of Domjur”, adding that the town has become a ‘mini-Pakistan’ and admonishes West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her party Trinamool Congress for the same.

The other version says that Pakistan flags were hoisted as a celebration of Trinamool Congress leader Firhad Hakim becoming the mayor of Kolkata.

Similar posts also made its way through to Twitter as well. We came across at least two handles tweeting on these lines

False, as the flags displayed in the images are not Pakistani flags. Similar confusion and misinformation has been spread in the past as well.

If you look closely, both the claims are based on the flag which is not the Pakistani national flag. In the images – the green flag with a crescent moon – is a generic flag. It is used as a religious symbol by the Muslim community in the subcontinent. Pakistan’s national flag has a white patch on the left side, which is not present in the images carried in the posts.
