Padmavati row: Why a February 14 release will work wonders for Deepika-Ranveer's film

Buzz has it that Padmavati makers are eyeing a February release.

When Sanjay Leela Bhansali conceived the idea of making a film on Rani Padmavati, little did he know that it would cost him his peace of mind and a lot more. Ever since its shooting began in January this year, Bhansali's period drama has been subjected to threats and violence, with groups attacking him and threats being issues left, right and centre.

From Bhansali thrashed on the film sets to death threats against Deepika Padukone and him, the tension around the film has now reached an astronomical level. Amid the high-tension drama, the makers of Padmavati decided to postpone the film's release from December 1, indefinitely. The new release date is yet to be announced.

But if a report in Spotboye is to be believed, the makers are eyeing the month of February for the release of Padmavati. With Salman Khan's Tiger Zinda Hai releasing on December 22, it would be suicidal to release Padmavati even in the first week of January.

Tiger Zinda Hai is expected to mint moolah over the few weeks after its release, given the craze around Bhai films, and Padmavati won't get the best opening during that time.

"Let's see what the makers do, because December is out of question now as Tiger Zinda Hai is slated to release by the end of the month. It will be interesting to see how they go about it as January also looks packed," trade expert Amod Mehra told Pinkvilla.

The next three Fridays in January are already packed with releases. If Anurag Kashyap's Mukkabaaz is clashing with Vikram Bhatt's 1921 on January 12, Abhishek Bachchan's Lefty has already taken the January 19 slot, as of now. And the Republic Day weekend will see Akshay Kumar's Padman clashing with Sidharth Malhotra's Aiyaary at the box office.

"A film like Padmavati will 100 per cent need an absolutely clear run. And even if there is a good film a week ahead or after Padmavati, it will affect its business, which won't be good at all for an expensive film like this," added trade analyst Komal Nahata.

Going by the slated releases, January is almost out of question for the release of Padmavati.

With Anushka Sharma's Pari releasing on February 9 and John Abraham's Parmanu clashing with Rani Mukerji's Hichki on February 23, buzz has it that Padmavati makers are looking for a February 14 release. A film like Padmavati needs a big release date, and what better date than February 14!

Add to that the fact that Padmavati will mark the fourth on-screen reunion for lovers Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh. The two have worked together in two Sanjay Leela Bhansali films before Padmavati; 2013's Goliyon Ki Leela Ram-Leela and 2015 release Bajirao Mastani. They were seen together in Homi Adajania's Finding Fanny too, in 2014.

"Nowadays, a release date is very critical. That's why once you miss out on a big release date, then your entire strategy becomes irrelevant," added Amod Mehra.

With the two films after Padmavati releasing 10 days later, the Sanjay Leela Bhansali film will get enough time to cast its magic at the box office. And seems like the best option now for Bhansali is to release his much-talked-about film with an eye on the Valentine's Day weekend.
